I play a lot of classic video games and complain about capitalism, usually not in the same post.

Sober since '19.
Before the Neo Geo Pocket proved you could make amazing handheld fighting games, Fatal Fury Special (1993) for the #GameGear was an achievement. Fluid combat, easy and responsive special moves, and beautiful 8-bit graphics with lots of colors and parallax—this was the best at the time. #retrogaming

The Legend of Nayuta: Endless Trails is a Japanese #PSP game that came out in 2012. Part of the Trails series, it's gorgeous for a game over 12 years old. Thankfully, due to fan translation, we can enjoy this #Falcom classic that many consider to be one of their masterpieces. #retrogaming

One of my favorite all time RPGs is #PopoloCrois, and now that the entire #PS1 trilogy is fan translated, you can play all three in a row as intended. Such attention to detail, world building, with a unique art style. The isometric landscape provides depth other games of the era lack. #retrogaming

Chase Bombers (1994) was a late bloomer to the #superscaler #arcade wars. Power Drift came out in '88, while Super Mario Kart hit consoles in '92, but Chase Bombers took the experience of both back to arcades in one sprite-scaling, psychedelic rainbow package—it's a hidden gem and rare to boot.

Unfortunately, the rest of the game fails to go as hard as the intro implies, Vigilante (1988) being another monotonous Yie Ar Kung Fu clone.

Sad, because the idea of "rescuing the Queen of Pop from Nazis" seems hard to ruin. 🤣

Why did they make so many of these crap games? #arcade #retrogaming

Tengai (1996) is a competent #arcade #shmup with the cutting edge features of the best of the era, namely a character select and unique attacks and abilities. The character designs are all adorable, and the "bomb" attacks all have unique hand-drawn animations. It's also on Switch now! #retrogaming

Space Bomber (1998) by #Psikyo is next level aesthetic trolling. The stupid, pre-rendered sprites and static backdrops feel bad on purpose. Setting that aside, this game kinda rules. The claw mechanic that allows you to capture and attack with your foes is big addictive fun. #arcade #retrogaming

Tecmo's Strato Fighter (1991) meets the very definition of hidden gem—an #arcade #shmup with no era home port, gorgeous graphics, and a killer soundtrack. The mechanics are typical but solid, with the ability to switch direction when needed, and there's lots of upgrades. Near-perfect. #retrogaming

The #arcade #vector classic Red Baron must have been amazing in 1981—this is a full-on flight simulator where you take out enemy fighters and blimps. It's basically a 3D version of Battlezone, and you can even go off course and attack land targets hidden in mountains. Still fun today. #retrogaming

Hotdog Storm (1996) is just your average late #nineties #arcade #shmup, quite competent, unremarkable, but good. The theme? Your average shmup science fiction setting. So, I can't explain the title at all. Mistranslation? #retrogaming

B. Rap Boys (1992) is an absurd, Dadaist #arcade #brawler featuring a rap soundtrack (with actual vocals—rare for era) and a hero that maniacally beats up foes on his bicycle, and when he loses that due to damage, switches to rollerblades. It's silly as heck and somewhat inexplicable. #retrogaming

Devil World (1987) is an early #Konami #arcade title that's probably way ahead of its time. It kind of feels like a fantasy version of Zombies Ate My Neighbors, combined with a power-up system resembling Gradius. There's some Gauntlet in here, too. Definitely underrated.

This is a strange one—Days of Thunder (1991) for the Game Boy is a racing game by the visionaries at Argonaut Software, later of Star Fox fame. This is a fully-fledged vector-based racing game, playing at a respectable, playable frame rate. Tom Cruise not included. #gameboy #retrogaming #racing

Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra (1991) redefined the dungeon crawler genre, but more than that, the game is all vibes. It's a beautiful game despite its age, with gorgeous island landscapes to explore, unique dungeons, and expansive cities. Best version is on the PC Engine CD. #crpg #retrogaming

The groundbreaking #AD&D: Pool of Radiance (1988) is one of the classic western RPGs of all time. You can play it in its original #DOS form, or in a very good, streamlined form on the #NES, but the best way is to play the remake in Unlimited Adventures (1994), with full VGA graphics. #retrogaming

The Black Onyx (1984) was one of the very first jRPGs ever made, famously programmed by a European living in Japan, his wife providing the Japanese dialogue. This is a fan-translated version for the #SG1000, Sega's pre-Master System console. It's surprisingly smooth, if a tad shallow. #retrogaming

Cadash (1989) is kind of an insane prospect: a #RPG #arcade machine, along with stats, equipment, NPCs, many towns and dungeons, and even some sequence breaking.

The arcade version was a quarter-munching nightmare—and it's still the best version, especially now that you can emulate. #retrogaming

W-Ring: The Double Rings (1990) is a semi-forgotten, underrated #shmup. The mechanics are simple, and the game is on the easy side, but I still find myself still playing it regularly. There's just something about it. The graphics are some of the best on the console. #tg16 #pcengine #retrogaming

Ultima VI: The False Prophet (1990) is my favorite PC RPG of all time, right next to Ultima V and VII. All three games pioneered open world, sandbox gameplay, day-night cycles, NPC schedules, and complex storylines. V and VI both have engaging, strategic combat as well. #ultima #dos #retrogaming

The #arcade #shmup Hyper Duel (1993) is next on my list of obscure shmups, separating itself from the pack with big detailed sprites, and the ability to summon little helper robots that also shoot enemies. So insane that we got so many good shmups in this era—truly a golden age. #retrogaming

GulfStream (2002) is a forgotten #arcade #shootemup that doesn't rewrite the rules or do anything particularly special—it's just classic #shmup action that does what it does with absolute finesse. It's a lot of fun and has great graphics.
