Bog Bears!
Hello everyone! It's been a while! Here are some bears :)

These gentle souls are nomadic in nature and graze the bogs for algae which nurture their powerful muscles and bones. A long cared for species is now nearly extinct and possibly connected to The Mold..?
The Bog Bear An ancient and critically endangered beast, these humble giants roam peat bogs feeding on algae. Living over 10,000 years old, these bears are slow moving, and rarely speed up for any reason, even danger. Tragically, this is often their downfall. They often are poached for many of their incredible qualities. An example is the peat moss that grows on them, as it is a powerful Panacea for Mushroomlings. However, it is slow growing like the Bog Bear, and is vital to the health of the Bog Bear. On top of needing to feed on algae, they need to slowly absorb moisture through the peat moss on their backs. This is due to the fact that they cannot hydrate through eating the moss, as the surface of their stomachs repel water, yet resist acid, with an incredibly rare compound called a “fluorocarbon”. Interestingly, this compound has only been found in Bog Bears. One thing to note of these massive pacifists, is their equally massive claws, jaws, and muscle. The constant feeding on algae includes immense protein and iron, along with numerous other nutrients. It’s quite odd how it’s not recorded anywhere that there have been fights, yet they possess many scars under their fur… Maybe their past Keepers were doing this intentionally? Oh, yes. Their caretakers, the “Keepers”, are a group of Mushroomlings derived from many different lineages dedicated to the nomadic lifestyle of living alongside the Bog Bears. To them it is a sacred duty to keep them alive and happy. Unfortunately, it’s down to keeping them from the brink of extinction now. With the Kingship, and even the Trametes Clergy is vested in them, I’d say it’s all of our duty now. Even more so with a possible cure of… Oh, I’m getting ahead of myself, apologies. Cont. In next picture... Closer picture of Bog Rosemary. Cont. Text! Bog Bears were named after their resemblance to, well, bears. Ironically, these creatures are more alike to marsupials, having premature young hide in pouches along their bellies. The cubs will nurse inside until large enough to be outside on their own. This is thought to be an advantage since Bog Bears constantly move and graze, and due to their massive size, can easily accidentally crush their young. None other than this herd have been spotted in quite a long time. These may very well be the last of the last. I still can’t shake the feeling… I feel like there is something connecting them to The Mold. Ever since their numbers started dwindling, the outbreaks have gotten more severe. And now it’s at its worst. Moldhosts can’t even settle near or contaminate their peat moss– heck– even being around them makes the air feel cleaner. I had such a rare chance to document these beautiful and gentle creatures in person, much to the unease of the Keepers. I spoke with them and exchanged some lovely customs. I'll send that in another document, only when they are ready and willing. Either way, I hope our Lordship and the Clergy have good intentions… These poor bears need something else looking out for them, not to use them. They’ve had enough of that. Bog Rosemary! These grow on Bog Bears in the peat moss.

The Anemone Stinkhorn is a small famine starting nightmare, one corn kernel sized beetle at a time. Just ignore the hundreds of others.

Anemone Stinkhorn The Anemone Stinkhorn is an odd case of Draconic mimicry, but on a tiny scale. Where these tiny creatures swarm, decay follows. Its' spores and rot seeping between its plates consume crops and dry wood. Smaller than a corn kernel, they bunch up in groups of hundreds, spewing these toxic mists, poisoning those in its path below it. Anemone Stinkhorns are an aggressive case, intentionally spreading these clouds of poisonous rotting residue from their rapidly failing bodies. Of course, decay causes illness in those exposed. Aside from indirect attack, those cornering or in the way of it are subject to mauling. Yes, in spite of an AS fitting in a mushroomling's hand, a swarm of them can easily tear them to a bloody pulp due to their speed, and incredibly sharp mandibles and claws. This is extremely abnormal behavior as almost no other Stinkhorn exhibits this aggressive behavior, without a means to feed. These small beetles are devastating to the environment, and thus are only alive a year at a time. Places consumed by the rot will experience rich growth after the spores seep below the soil into the moist dirt. Afterwards the spores begin drying out taking an "egg" like formation. Whilst drying, nutrient rich fluids from the spores leak into the soil expediting growth.... MORE ON NEXT IMAGE Anenome Stinkhorn from above Unfortunately, all it takes for a new generation to form is a drought, and these "eggs" will develop into larvae killing off crops and foliage above whilst chewing roots, until molting and maturing after months of rapid growth. Quite literally growing out of their skin, they ravage the skies and destroy the lands until it repeats. The curled tongue that occasionally strikes out between the Anemone Stinkhorn's mandibles is used to detect more potential crops for spores. In spite of having mandibles, they rarely stop to eat, this is the beginning of their failed body designs. Their bodily instinct to "spread" is so powerful it will not give them time to recover and last longer in a balance like other Stinkhorns. This aggression in competitiveness and energy consumption make them microscopic in comparison to larger slower Stinkhorns that last decades. It's honestly startling how they haven't disappeared compared to other species. Bassett Stinkhorns are even considered docile, and will allow other creatures to climb onto it's massive back and eat flies attracted to its smell. It's presumed mushroomling society may have given them the extra food / nesting source they need to survive. Anemone Stinkhorn from the side

Here are more Mushroomlings! Here's the Deathcap. These guys are quite rare and are often mistaken for other species! More info in alt text!

I've been unhappy with the look / visual idea of the drawing, so I pushed through it so I can press on to more ideas in the future!
This guy was taken from a home after a few physical and psychological conditions *may* have hinted at him being a Death Cap. Once he dropped the mask it was pretty obvious, and they took him into a nice little "program." The Death Cap These rare mushroomlings are a dangerous anomaly with an unknown origin. Death Caps have no known homeland and are seemingly unaware of any of their family tree. They pop up with no evidence of a parent or spores. Not as an infant but a child. There is a popular theory on how they insert themselves into mushroomling society, however. Like a parasitic brood bird, they are placed into other mushroomling families, and they will greatly resemble them. Due to the large spawns of Paddy Straw, Puffball, and the White Ceasar mushroomlings; they are quickly accepted and raised. They are nearly physically undetectable. There are signs, but these can be attributed to scars or common physical defects. Unfortunately, they usually have to be dead on a table to be 100% confirmed bodily–this is due to fatal toxins they release post-mortem. There is evidence of some form of "tampering" with how their bodies form. Personality traits are typically what these mushroomlings are identified for, and it is the cause of their dangerous nature-- Around 97% of DC mushroomlings are confirmed to have a unique antisocial personality disorder, with… unusual properties. It's called Death Cap's Neuroneutrulis Disorder, or DCND, or even just Death Cap's Personality Disorder, since it's solely found within the species... MORE NEXT SLIDE! Death Caps from younger to older. These mushrooms look alot like multiple edible and choice mushrooms. MORE LORE As children, they have a tendency to "stalk" their parents and siblings. Watching them when they eat, sleep, talk-- everything. Talking, communication, and emotions in general for themselves are quite stunted. Emotions could even be null entirely as children. This could be mistaken for shyness or stubbornness. As they age, they may begin talking slightly more. Usually mimicking those around them and masking. Even when raised in the best households, they usually end up with violent tendencies, much to the parents' dismay. With adolescence, they end up either on the street or have constant run-ins with the law, landing them in jails or prisons. Their muscles and joints are laced with more proteins and are larger than average, but with age and combat make them stronger. Death Caps have incredible stamina and carrying strength, which, combined with quick thinking, makes them a terrifying force. This is where they get employed by the MEU, the Mold Extermination Unit. Their aggression is incredible in taking out these sources of Mold infestations, and their toxins make them turning impossible for The Mold to use as nutrients. On top of that, the life-threatening wounds from Death Caps leak toxins, poisoning nearby Mold. Mature Death Caps are usually in MEU. Those who are not don't have DCND. In these squads, they learn to work together or die, and in turn, rarely, they develop socially. On top of that, they may, exceedingly rarely form a bond. A Death Cap's bond is something not to be taken lightly-- they ride or die.

The Bleeding Tooth Mushroomling

Hiya! Shoutout to @dandelionlop.bsky.social for the suggestion for the Bleeding Tooth Fungus! These guys are quite elaborate.

Their lore is quite long, so keep an eye out in the Alt text! I had to split it up in the first two images.
The Bleeding Tooth mushroomling above is a young woman attempting to sell you some repellent for your trip home. She looks confident with her pricing. She leans against the pine branches, behind her, it overlooks more pine trees. Another remote species, the Bleeding Tooth mushroomlings, live high up in mighty pine trees. They are by nature mycorrhizal, and need the mutualistic benefits of exchanging nutrients with the pine roots that they live in. Functionally, they both need each other. Bleeding Tooth mushroomlings never need to leave the tree, and have adapted to being only able to live in a tree. Living in a city sized tree has its ups and downs. First is adapting to the height, including the climb and the fall. BT mushroomlings have become very lanky, and have developed claws and sticky pads on their hands and feet for climbing. Being small makes the fall much less dangerous to begin with. On top of that, they have hollow bones, this is for the sheer amount of blood in their bodies. More blood allows more oxygen to circulate around their body. For them, this healthy blood saturation gives their eyes a dark black / red color. Roughly speaking, the average BT mushroomling has 4 times the amount of blood in their body which causes another startling, yet harmless characteristic. Now, the reason the Bleeding Tooth mushroomling has their name– they all suffer hematohidrosis. Simply put, they sweat blood. BT mushroomling blood is known for numerous unsavory traits, however, at a certain age, it is a lifesaving animal repellant. This bitter smelling chemical is extremely valuable, since anything larger than an unarmed mushroomling is a danger. Only issue is that only a fraction of BT mushroomlings can make the specific bitter chemical. They have to be under 25, and above 15. The issue with the younger side is overworking till dehydration, while the other side is inefficiency. The market has its own issues. On the bright side, it keeps critters out of the tree! Above is pictured a sketch of a BT mushroomling from a different colony viewing another BT colony from a far. They are wearing a glider, standing proud, looking at the lights in the pine in the far distance. The social dynamics is about the same as the average mushroomling city, except, you know, more concern about safety with children falling out. So BT biology came up with a neat trick. When about a few months to 4 years old, the children grow soft sticky spines on their back that only stick to bark. You can imagine how mothers prevent their feisty 2 year old child from running off a ledge while they are struggling to prepare dinner. Just pick up, stick, get a short task done, and retrieve the small child. Done! When it comes to others visiting the tree, BT mushroomlings are very enthusiastic about trade. Most often either inventors, or chemists, they enjoy the pleasure of science and trade. Learning is one of if not the most treasured resource among them, besides rare ground resources. In spite of repelling most threats just by scent alone, these mushroomlings suffer severe crippling anxiety on the forest floor. It could be fear of the dangerous new environment, or it could be genetically hardwired. This means that the only way that things get from one place to the other is by gliders (usually distant tree to tree) or by outsider merchants. Using gliders is only an option for BT mushroomlings due to their hollow bones. More than one stubborn merchant has fallen to their death through insistence. Poor rich bastards. Young Bleeding Tooth Fungi from above! These droplets are not blood, but are a part of a process called guttation, kinda like osmosis. Too much water builds up in these young mushrooms and gets pushed out by too high pressure evening out from high to low. It's red because of a pigment in the mushroom! These Trametes mushroomlings aren’t actually a species, they’re a clergy sect! There are rumors connecting their goddess and the Ink Caps...

Image above depicts a Turkey Tail Mushroomling, also known as the Tramates branch of Mycelism, the most common overarching clergy across the mushroomling race– that we know of. He is tending to a sickly mushroomling, offering prayers to a deity to heal them. The goddess is vague; represented by gold and white lights. This deity is said to be a goddess named Anastralaze that represents acceptance, restoration, warmth, neighborly love, and second chances. Essentially, as long as you welcome those in need into your arms, she will care for you and yours. She specializes in healing ailments, illnesses, injuries, and especially fatal diseases. Anatralaze is also powerful enough to ward off The Mold for a period of time, but not permanently. Any delay and the spread begins again. Fun fact! Any mushroomling can become any clergy sect, such as the Trametes. Anyone is welcome into the Tramates sect. Such is the nature of neighborly love and acceptance. Forgiveness is another lesser theme, but it is considered a common courtesy rather than a central value. Some things can be forgiven, such as “morally gray” areas, such as thieving for survival, or killing to defend one’s self or loved ones. These are usually a one time “get out of jail free card” and usually cause the law-breaker to live the rest of their life as a cleric. Only if the clergy gets to the criminal first before the law does. However, be wary, Anastralaze does not take kindly to her gifts being used in malice or greed, she has quite the wrathful history with those who misuse her blessings… Especially her mercy. From a distance I thought they might be fly agarics. Alas.
They're large and orange-brown and in more or less a straight line. Slugs have nibbled them to create spotted patterns on top, which is why I was thinking maybe, just maybe, fly agarics.

Pictured is a SG mushroomling guarding a merchant's stall while he works. These fellas are remarkable, one of the few non-soft bodied mushroomlings!

Split Gill mushrooms growing on a log, thanks to the person above! The Split Gill Mushroomling (Pictured above is a SG mushroomling's first shift as a merchant's guard. He anxiously watches the viewer, unsure of our intentions.) These mushroomlings are the very hardy and widespread Split Gill mushroomlings! These fellas are everywhere due to their ability to grow stronger than the timber they are born in. Resistant to most damaging forces, and capable of adapting to change from surviving all around the globe it’s no wonder why they have been found everywhere except Antarctica. The humble Split Gill mushroomlings are a significant pillar of the working class. Durable and adaptable, these fellas work a majority of temporary jobs, especially anything that requires muscle. Their tough frame and skin gives them a unique quality outside of most mushroomlings– they aren’t soft bodied like the majority. This barrier to the outside world helps protect them from cuts, burns, frost, and the newly devastating Mold. On top of that layer of protection, they have another, albeit more tedious, waterproof layer of “fur”. It’s called “fur” although it's more like strands of mycelium containing the Split Gill spores. These growing tufts of fluff keep them dry, but this fur grows on things if they have been in contact with objects for too long, such as clothing or tools. With the absence of the original mushroomling, this fur will soon fall off.

They have quite the staggering difference once they go through maturation. Read the alt text for more lore on this unique species!

The Fairy Ink Cap Mushroomlings A nervous child mushroomling right next to her mother in a tunnel entering their hidden village. CW: Death, Childhood Disease These two very different looking mushroomlings are actually the same species, and an endangered one at that. This morphological change is an unatural one-- a tragic curse laid upon the ancestor mushroomling people. Many subspecies from these ancestors were lost, melting to inky masses after the curse was cast, and this gave rise to their name from other mushroomlings finding their remains--- a constant grim reminder of their fate. The now Ink Caps family, lost species after species until the Fairy Ink Caps. This line of Ink Caps willed themselves into survival, fighting and winning against all odds, even in suffering. They lost all of their bodies, except their bones and remainder of flesh in the form of gel. They are cursed to live with fragile skin as children, and to lose it with age. They lose their humanoid appearance and become more slime like, usually all at once in a coccoon like state during puberty. Whilst viscious looking, they are a calm, quiet, and reclusive species; rarely leaving their own camp. Because of this, FIC mushroomlings prioritize family and bonds above all else, and would die fighting for each other. Also in spite of appearances, they can eat, speak, and do everything else normally. However, difficulties that come with a gell like body create different approaches to regular activities, such as large bathtub-like holes in the ground for the adults to rest in. Due to their physique, they are often attacked by outsiders, which leaves them anxious and highly protective of themselves and their children (which are unfortunately thought to be kidnapped). If a small child of theirs is spotted, it is better to back away and leave slowly. You can bet that the little kid's mom or dad is right there, just hidden out of sight...
