Anyone can become disabled.

Anyone can become chronically ill.

It’s not a choice. It’s not a moral failing. It’s not something you can “try harder” your way out of.

You can be the healthiest person in the world & completely disabled in an instant.

It’s a minority group you can join anytime.

Reading through this gave me 1. words for some of my experiences 2. a reminder that I'm not (by far) the only person who feels these ways. 💜

It's important that we continue to listen and learn from our elders, and continue to pass down their stories with each new generation. Our history is important.

You know, I'm glad my brain is now able to appreciate a moustache without immediately thinking of old adult movies.

There are far more disabled people pretending to be well than there are pretending to be sick.

Being on disability is not fun.

You’re forced into legislated poverty. Treated like a “useless eater”. Shunned, abandoned and constantly questioned.

It’s dehumanizing 🧵

Many disabled people can’t “shop local”

We’re housebound and often bedbound.

We lack disposable income.

We have huge medical and caretaking expenses that wipe out discretionary spending.

Instead of shaming us, help us. Take us to the store. Donate to mutual aid. Shop for us.

Getting an ADHD diagnosis at 49 removed decades of shame for me. It's not my personal failing, it's how my brain is wired. Having medication to support my ADHD is as critical for keeping me alive as having medication and decades of therapy to support my chronic depression.
I hope everyone involved in this new wave of ADHD denialism gets gaslighted and abused into thinking they are intrinsically broken and fundamentally evil for 35 years of their life and comes out of it shattered and traumatized.
ADHD diagnoses in the U.S. have been climbing steadily over the past three decades, and so have prescriptions for the medication to manage the symptoms. Some researchers are raising fundamental questions.

**gently grabs your face** Listen.

It's hard right now. Harder than usual. Things are horrifying, scary, infuriating, and a lot.

I don't know a single person who isn't going through it in some way.

Take breaks. Take your meds. Drink some water. Eat something.

Reach out, when you need to.

I don't have all the answers, but for the last few months I've been thinking about joy as resistance.

Joy is rebellion.

And joy and community are two of the things that will help us survive the coming years.

Heck, yeah! I try to rein it in when it's truly inappropriate, but otherwise. My dad used to do this as well, when I was little.
