When I was a kid in the 60s and 70s Staithes had a bad reputation for being 'rough' and run down.
It didn't pick up until the 80s when the middle classes started to buy up houses as holiday homes.
It's just about all holiday rentals and second homes now.
Go at this time of year and it's deserted

One of my favourite pubs is in Staithes, not the Cod & Lobster on the sea wall but the Royal George on the High Street.

I would guess the artist was by the bridge over the beck.
