There was never a road along the harbour north of the bridge. You approached along Baxtergate.
A real bottleneck as before the high level bridge was built it was part of the main coast road.

One of my favourite pubs is in Staithes, not the Cod & Lobster on the sea wall but the Royal George on the High Street.
