Reviewing the work of the white churches, Frederick Douglass had this to say: “Between the Christianity of this land and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference—so wide that to receive the one as good, pure, and holy, is of necessity to reject the other as bad, corrupt, and wicked. To be the friend of the one is of necessity to be the enemy of the other. I love the pure, peaceable, and impartial Christianity of Christ; I therefore hate the corrupt, slave-holding, women-whipping, cradle-plundering, partial and hypocritical Christianity of this land. Indeed, I can see no reason but the most deceitful one for calling the religion of this land Christianity…”

I'm attending a conference at an oceanfront hotel in Myrtle Beach, where I last stayed in 2018. Compared to last time, the beach is much less crowded. Canadians are typically a big tourist contingent here and I am wondering if their boycott is the reason.

For many very wealthy people, there is no such thing as "enough".

At a party given by a billionaire on Shelter Island, Kurt Vonnegut informs his pal, Joseph Heller, that their host, a hedge fund manager, had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his wildly popular novel Catch-22 over its whole history. Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have … enough.” Enough. I was stunned by the simple eloquence of that word—stunned for two reasons: first, because I have been given so much in my own life and, second, because Joseph Heller couldn’t have been more accurate. I would like one just like I ordered new back in 1988 in this color, Medium Cabernet. Mine had a grey interior and a 5-speed manual. I see a lot of people preferring the notchback, which, I agree, looks better. But, the trunk of the notchback was so miniscule that I went for the hatch.
