It is not and never will be clear to everyone.
I hope it's clear to everyone now that Trump really is going for it - he's trying to become a dictator. I don't know if he'll succeed, but he's working to install himself as an autocrat unaccountable to voters. And he's weaponizing the military against Americans who oppose him as part of that effort

I still think many Americans have no idea how bad this is going to get. I saw President Obama reposting a tepid, mealy-mouthed analysis by Ezra Klein—who's never seen a phenomenon he couldn't be 5 years late in incompetently circumscribing—and I felt like we don't have what it takes to survive this.

Lots of people thought it was funny when they lied in 2017 about the size of his first inauguration. Others of us knew how serious it was and where we were going.
