There's a throw away line in the film where she mentions a mysterious event earlier in her adult life that waylaid her career path and this is her last chance. At least that's how I interpreted the dialogue. You're right though that the set-up does cause the eyebrow to raise.

I saw it last week at the Denver Film Fest. Very highly recommended. Wonderful mix of charming characters and historical analysis. Does a great job of showing the social impact of film preservation.
