Calcium and magnesium in the pore of NMDA receptors!
Lipids play an unexpected role. The hydration shells of Ca2+ and Mg2+ could be the difference between permeation and block. So much physiology in the energetics of H2O.
Very stimulating work! Congrats @lab-furukawa.bsky.social

Ingenious concept - light sheet on serial sections by photo-etching the expanded hydrogel, layer by layer.
Photo-sectioning is quite slow, and the volumetric images are insanely large and complex, but the data look wonderful.

Perhaps even more incredible are the full field of view synchronised events, measured with our high-affinity sensor iGlu3-Slow2. (No we don't know what they are, thanks for asking). We also see them (less often) with iGluSnFR3, and basically never with iGlu3Fast (once after damage to slice).

Katalin made some mutants of iGluSnFR3 that have improved properties. They end up being similar to (although not the same as) the new iGluSnFR4 variants.
iGlu3Fast is quite incredible in 2-Photon. This is a hippocampal dendrite, spontaneous activity. A world away from 1 Hz fluctuations!

Still going, but at least now we are cranking. Train #7 is comfortably today’s fastest. Our journey is much easier in a day since this fast line reduced this Munich to Berlin leg to 4 hours.

But train #7 will be ICE 1018 to Berlin Gesundbrunnen, one hour later or so.

We made it to Wörgl perfectly on time but our connecting train (train #6, RJ 84 to Munich) is late. Here’s a picture of our little REX3 ready to trundle back to Schwarzach, with the mountains we passed in the background.
