I’m pretty sure I saw them play Darlington Hippodrome in ’88.

Yep - suspect the floor was blue too, actually.

I've only seen about 15 eps of the original #StarTrek; wouldn't call myself a fan. I thought I'd give it a go. Will post comments if a) I can be bothered, and b) I get more than 2 eps in.

Thanks, Andrew! The series does have some absolute classics in it, but it feels very variable, to be honest. The films are mostly great.

Cheers! It was a struggle a bit during Season 3, but I got there in the end...

Cheers, Stuart! No idea if I tied up with established opinion most of the time…

It’s been recommended to me a couple of times now, so I might check it out!

Oh, my…
I’m at my final frontier. I’m not boldly going to continue beyond this as I’ve seen the 1990s-2000s series already, and would spend most of it waxing lyrical about Darmok, Drumhead and Duet, so that’s the end of this thread. I hope I showed some Enterprise. It was… fun. #StarTrek

But the films did keep the series alive, and allowed it to move on to greater heights, with better-told-tales and proper character drama in TNG and DS9. The films remain the peak of Shatner-era Trek.

And that’s #StarTrek done. The films have been the purest interpretation of Kirk and his crew, delving deeper into them, but I still feel many of the crew are ciphers. I don’t know Uhura’s background or Scotty’s family. Sulu is given a daughter in a film he’s not in. Such missed opportunities.

Overall, it’s a poor ending to Kirk’s life, in an addendum to a new crew’s tale. The Enterprise B stuff is ropey too: good that Kirk saves the new ship, but making Harriman an unbelievable bellend to make it possible is mince.

What does work is the chemistry between the leads, because Shatner and Stewart are at opposite ends of the actor spectrum: one a bold, personality actor and one a classical, Shakespearean actor. One thinking he’s the best actor and the other knowing he is. Best line: ‘Call me Jim.’ 5/

Can’t help feeling it should have been tied to the fate of the Enterprise more, or of Spock, or of the Klingons, even though death can be meaningless. Very conflicted about it. It’s more epilogue than conclusion. 4/

His death does seem moving as the 108th episode in his life, but it also feels like it’s an addendum to someone else’s story. To be honest, it’s a little wasted, as if it’s not how he should have gone. 3/

I suppose we had to see him die, and coming out of retirement one last time is a reasonable way to do it. I’m not sure the Soren mission was important enough for Kirk to die for though, and the ‘Bridge on the Captain’ ending is a bit rubbish. But how fitting that Kirk dies twice? 2/
