Ferryhil is the highest point on the Great North Road between Gateshead and London, and you can still just see Brass Farm Mill on the skyline, looking south from Andrew's Stobb.

And it is said that on New Year's Eve, you can still hear his cries from the mill... 28/

Rather wonderfully, the mill is still there to this day: it was rebuilt in the 21st century and is once more a habitation. I don't know if the ghosts of Jane, John, and little Elizabeth have moved on or are at rest... 27/

The 'Old Mill', or 'Cuttythroat Farm', was right on the edge of the school grounds, just next to the cross-country run field. As kids we'd dare each other to go in: we knew it was full of ghosts - ghosts of the murder years ago.

It was our legend. 22/

The mill remained. A windmill was built on the site in the 1840s; it was still operating as a cornmill until lightning struck it in 1903. By 1974, it was ruin.

That year, Ferryhill Comprehensive School was built: right next door to it. I went to Ferryhill School from 1993 to 2000. 21/

The children were buried at Kirk Merrington church, a mile from the murder, and their gravestone is still there. It's rumoured that Mills' father etched out the word 'murdered' from their stone with his stick, as he was ashamed of his son's actions. 18/

Rumour has it that Mills' body was eventually buried at Thinford crossroads, a few yards away. (I now work in a building just round the corner...) 17/
