It's literally the logic of the Cultural Revolution. Ag production correlates with toolmaking correlates with steel production, so melt down your toasters. Manufacturing correlates with trade balance correlates with #tariffs, so raise sneaker prices until U.S. manufacturing hits government targets.

Seriously, here's how they calculated:
1. What's our trade deficit with Country X?
2. Part of this might be due to their #tariffs & part might be because we demand more of their stuff, but let's impute it all to their tariffs (linear model-cuz math's hard).
3. Divide this by 2 and tariff them back.

I was thinking exactly this. Expecting those who accept the offer just find themselves immediatelt fired.
Musk made this exact same "deferred resignation" offer at Twitter. And then he used the list of people who accepted it as a list of people to fire within days of "sign ups" closing.
They'll try the same thing here. Fire them in February and claim they waived protections by accepting the offer.

I am an Indian American who was born here and it's crystal clear that the Democratic Party sees me as American and a large part of the base of the Republican Party does not. I hope Indian Americans remember this moment at the next election. They don't see you as one of them. And never will.
