Compare this to Mastodon, where an instance essentially has full control over users' data, and if it decides to shut down or cease service for specific users, they're shit out of luck and have to start over. Not a very decentralized way to handle accounts.

the fact that with @bsky.app / @atproto.com you don’t need to rely on your current PDS’ cooperating or continuing to exist in order to move to another PDS is a HUGE advantage over Mastodon. If anything, that makes Bluesky more decentralized, Mastodon instances have full control over your data.

the fact that with @bsky.app / @atproto.com you don’t need to rely on your current PDS’ cooperating or continuing to exist in order to move to another PDS is a HUGE advantage over Mastodon. If anything, that makes Bluesky more decentralized, Mastodon instances have full control over your data.

just like bluesky, I can switch my email service to outlook and move my custom domain email to there, and my email address would still be andrew@pizzaworld.com but with a dif provider storing my stuff.

it works a lot like email, believe or not. If i own a business called PizzaWorld, i sign up for a gmail business account and my email is andrew@pizzaworld.com, then:
- andrew@pizza.world is my “handle” that uses a custom domain

Re: the yearly daylight savings vs standard time debate, i say we split the difference. When we go back to daylight savings time in march, we spring the clocks forward a half hour, and leave it like that forever.

Are there any alternatives to the Internet Archive that are built around P2P, so that everyone can contribute to hosting/sharing web archives? Seems like having all these important archives hosted by a single organization isn't the best idea for longevity/redundancy
