Not only is this military parade a waste of tax-payer money and of the military's time, it also has real Trump as Veruca Salt energy.

We need Planned Parenthood, y'all! Please, please stop defunding it.
The plan to defund Planned Parenthood would cost taxpayers $300 million over the next decade, according to a leaked preliminary estimate compiled by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
The GOP's plan to defund Planned Parenthood would add $300 million to the deficit
So much for cutting costs.

Listening to Beth Van Duyne's phone call "town hall" because she's too much of a coward to host a public town hall for her constituents. It's MAGA propaganda thus far with very, very carefully "selected" questions.

Woohoo!!!
We deserved some good news!

Deeply grateful for this D Magazine reporting. We should all be wary of organizations intent on hiding their funders.
NEW: Last week, a charter school nonprofit was launched at an event only covered by the right-wing Dallas Express. It turns out the board of the nonprofit includes Monty Bennett, the publisher of the Express, but advisors didn't know. Three have since resigned.

My latest for Texas Highways, in which I, a sober person, enlist my husband to be a taste tester so we can check out a cool, Dallas bar. Spoiler: he said the cocktail he had was delicious!

I think I can’t be shocked anymore but then I read the news and here I am, slack-jawed.

We can, and should, 100% do better for Texas teachers. This leg session contact your state reps and demand they fully fund public schools and educators.
“. . . In places like Texas there’s a fundamental disinvestment in children.”

Many educators are turning to the nonprofit DonorsChoose to help stock their classrooms with paper, pencils, and novels. https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/donorschoose-website-combats-low-school-funding/

In Austin for work staying near the arboretum, but if memory serves, there is no actual arboretum in the sense of a place where they cultivate a garden and trees.

RIP to Cecile Richards, former head of Planned Parenthood, and all around amazing human and activist. I had the honor of meeting her once in Dallas, and she radiated warmth, intelligence, and humor. We were so lucky to have her advocating for our rights for as long as we did.

Update: the neighborhood kids were playing in the snow, and I called them to come over and see the owl. They have names him Liam.

Huge announcement! An owl has taken shelter on our front porch. I repeat: we have an owl!!!!

The best thing about having a non-native-Texan spouse and living in a state with some non-intuitively pronounced city names (see: Manor, Buda, Humble), I can convince my husband any Texas town name is pronounced in the wildest way possible.

Very much worth a read.
The murder of UnitedHealthcare’s C.E.O. is one symptom of the American appetite for violence; his line of work is another, Jia Tolentino writes. For a lot of people, a denied health-insurance claim can instantly bend the trajectory of a life toward bankruptcy and misery and death.

As a Fort Worth native, it’s truly a bizarre delight to watch Landman and see my sleepy hometown on the small screen. TCU? Rivercrest? The Fort Worth Club? I’m just waiting for the Montgomery Street Cafe to show up.
