A fantastic job opportunity for someone to work at the interface between Atlantic salmon habitat modelling and management. Cutting edge research as part of an excellent project team.
Postdoc offer : Remote sensing modeler of Atlantic salmon river habitat suitability
We are looking for a resourcefull person with cross-over expertises in remote sensing (Lidar and satellite imagery), programming, wildlife habitat modelling... and ideally hydraulic modelling and AI. ;-)

1. Accurate (unbiased and precise) quality controlled data are essential for understanding and monitoring trends in river temperature. However, researchers often collate and analyse data without consideration of these issues. A new 📜 & summary🧵 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
The Influence of Equipment Bias on Reported Temperature Trends: Implications for River Temperature Monitoring Networks
River temperature is an important control on ecosystem health. Concerns around climate change impacts and availability of lower cost sensors have led to an increase in temperature monitoring of aquat....

New paper alert in HESS with Erin Nicholls and @seankcarey.bsky.social ! We used generalized additive models to assess the drivers of seasonality in stream chemistry across ten permafrost catchments in the Yukon Territory! (1/n)

The role of catchment characteristics, discharge, and active- layer thaw in seasonal stream chemistry across 10 permafrost catchments
Abstract. High-latitude catchments are rapidly warming, leading to altered precipitation regimes, widespread permafrost degradation, and shifts in stream chemistry across major arctic rivers. In headw...

Wow, here's the Yukon River ice break-up in the territory of the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin. Our research group at YukonU had boots on the ground and eyes in the sky (plane/UAV) to make observations. These observations help researchers create models to better predict and respond to flooding due to ice jams.

NEW PAPER, JUST OUT! 👀

Insects from the '70s and '80s were already collecting microplastic, decades before the term microplastic even existed. 🤯

A thread on the surprising history of this pollutant and the incredible insect larvae that helped us uncover it. 🐛

Happy field work Friday!

Had 2nd year undergraduate students out measuring stream flow on @mcmasteruniversity.bsky.social west campus this week for a hydrology lab session.

Despite a couple leaky waders, the students loved the practical hands-on experience. We saw a mink too! 🦦 #Neature

First paper of my PhD published, woo!

It asks how stream thermal sensitivity is influenced by northern environmental factors *cough* permafrost *cough*

Key pf. take-away: permafrost may both increase and moderate thermal sensitivity.

Get the details here!:

The influence of permafrost and other environmental factors on stream thermal sensitivity across Yukon, Canada
Abstract. Thermal sensitivity, defined as the slope of a linear regression between stream and air temperatures, is a useful indicator of the strength of coupling between meteorological forcings and st...

Please note that this is work in progress and that more people will be added. Feel free to suggest BlueSky handles in comments.

I made a Water Science 💧 Feed! I already added some folks to it and am slowly figuring out how to add more folks, but if you use "hydrology", "watersci", "waterscience" or the 💧 it should pop up in the feed!
If you can't find it, let me know and I'll try to add you!

Another field work photo from Yukon, Canada. This one shows pH dependent mineral precipitation at the confluence of two streams. The white colour is from aluminum precipitates and orange colour is from iron precipitates. This phenomenon results from natural weathering of shales.

First salt tracer study successfully completed in my Yukon study streams!! Lots of surface and subsurface transient storage in these permafrost-rich headwater streams. Having some good tunes makes the stirring much easier. Many thanks to Matt Lindsay at USask for lending the geopump!
