What a thrill to meet up with these incredible literacy leaders from across Canada🇨🇦 AND the US🇺🇸 last night!

While everyone has a different reason for why they fight for change in the way literacy is taught, the one thing we have in common is that our children are always at the heart of our work.🧵

It is much harder to create than to criticize. I work on AI-generated math videos year round - much easier to tear someone else’s apart than to make the script for a perfect one. There are a lot of critics in education, and not enough people willing to write the script.

I firmly believe that engaging, evidence-based explicit instruction is highly possible for schools. I also know, having worked in a variety of settings of disadvantage, that it is absolutely crucial we get this right for the children who need us most.

"Kids enjoy memorizing basic facts. It's not a chore like many people portray. It can be a game kids enjoy, and they can do it quickly. It doesn't have to cause math anxiety." —Tom Loveless in an interview with @rastokke.bsky.social's Chalk & Talk podcast https://bit.ly/3XgAt94
Understanding math reform ideology with Tom Loveless (Ep 25) | Chalk & Talk
In this episode, math professor Anna Stokke is joined by education policy expert, Dr. Tom Loveless.  They discuss the National Math Advisory Panel and some of the recommendations in from its final report.  They talk about the influential 1989 NCTM standards and their global impact on math education as well as the history of the math wars. Tom discusses some of his concerns about the California Math Framework and whether its recommendations are aligned with those in the National Math Advisory Panel report.  They cover many other topics such as San Francisco’s unsuccessful de-tracking initiative and the importance of memorizing math facts.  This episode is a must listen for anyone who teaches math, as well as parents and policymakers.
