Today, my B.Ed teachers paired “Read Alouds for All Learners” by @mollyness.bsky.social with strategies from “The Reading Comprehension Blueprint” by Nancy Hennessey! To deepen our knowledge and understanding of reading comprehension, we discussed “Rethinking How to Promote Reading Comprehension”!

#TerrificTeacherTuesday!
Every Tuesday, I will share a post of a teacher who stands out and deserves to be recognized for their hard work $
&dedication to student literacy!

Today, I am recognizing Danielle Doucet, a FI teacher in St. John, NB. You are doing amazing things and are sooo appreciated!🤩

We have to dispel the belief that learning language is easy. Yes, it’s a natural process. But just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s easy.

For example, our Ss may hear what we’re saying. They may be able to repeat what we’re saying. But that doesn’t mean they understand what we’re saying.”🧵

How many teachers know the Not-So-Simple-View-of-Writing & know how to use it to inform their classroom instruction?

This infographic shows how complex the writing process compared to the reading process!

Which makes me wonder, why aren’t we discussing this more often in our Teacher PD? #Writing

I have updated my Reading Rope of PODCASTS to align with each strand of Scarborough’s Reading Rope (2001), acting as a visual reminder that the reading process is complex and teachers need to build our knowledge of ALL strands of the Rope including oral language skills! @knowledgematrs.bsky.social

Deimplementation is not just important in schools- it is ESSENTIAL for protecting teachers’ mental health and overall well-being. Join me on September 24th to learn which teaching practices I’ve removed, re-engineered or reduced to focus on only a few, evidence-based practices that WORK! Register⬇️

For the past 4 years, during my back-to-school preparation, I have hung a model of “Scarborough’s Reading Rope” on a bulletin board in my school!

It is a reminder of how complex the reading process is, what we need to teach and not assume kids know.

Huge thanks to my daughter Sophie for her help!

Summer reading has begun!📘

I love “Making Room for Impact”! Here’s why this book resonates with me:

- “work is expanding beyond the time available with no real evidence that the additional hours are pushing the needle on student achievement, which has largely remained stage my since the 1970’s.”🧵

In thread, Kim answers my question about age/grade these activities are designed for ➡️ K-2 (and older children who may not have consolidated their PA skills yet)
Looking for ways to help prevent the summer slide?? Me, too! 🛝☀️

Every year, I send my “Sound Skills Choice Board” home with students so they can practice these essential skills with their parents/caregivers.

These foundational literacy skills are cross linguistic so #FSL kids will benefit, too!

I love the book “How Learning Happens” by Dr. Carl Henrick and recently started following him on Substack where I’ve discovered a treasure chest of incredible resources!

This Teacher’s Guide is available to teachers who want to learn how to work smarter, not harder!
