I read an Elizabeth Taylor (the novelist) book recently, written in the 50s and it had a passage about cinema-going which talks about 'seeing it round'.

Morning all.

The sound of the rain on the road is doing me in today. I must go back to poetic interpretations of every rain event like I did in 2006. I have lost my way and you can’t really battle it because there’s such a surplus of rain in November. Once you engage w it, it will somehow greet you differently

This sentence was taken out of a lecture they commissioned, reviewed through the full editorial process, and recorded four weeks ago in front of 500 people in the BBC Radio Theatre.

I was told the decision came from the highest levels within the BBC. /2

It’s especially ironic because the lecture is exactly about the ‘paralyzing cowardice’ of today’s elites.

About universities, corporations and media networks bending the knee to authoritarianism. /4

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

From Doireann Ní Ghríofa, author of A Ghost in the Throat, Said the Dead is a work of sublime intensity and tenderness. A book that is both history and ghost story. A book that will leave you gasping by its final page.

Coming on 21 May 2026. You can pre-order it now.

Unfortunately, I can confirm that this is true.

I have known Carl for 2 decades and he is smart, dedicated, and quite apolitical, focused on science and getting stuff done on important problems.

Huge unnecessary loss of leadership and expertise.
Hearing news that Carl Dieffenbach, the Director of the Division of AIDS at #NIH (NIAID), has been removed from his position because he was "not aligned with HHS/OMB."

Russell Vought continues to remove great scientists as part of the Project 2025 mission to politicize and destroy NIH.

Colin & I agree on 40s. I think we should all be in our 40’s twice over. Remove another decade

Starting my Butterfly Season 2025 thread. It will be a gradual thread this weekend and maybe into next week.

I must begin with my favorite butterfly photo this year. A difficult choice.

Hendrix was a huge SF nerd - I know this because I once commissioned a feature called Jimi Hendrix’s Five Favourite Science Fiction novels - so I’m in no doubt as to who is the biggest fan here.
If this doesn’t brighten up your feed just a bit then I don’t know what.
