I don’t know that anyone with actual power ever intended that, though they convinced plenty of developers that they did (super recommend reading Cyberlibertarianism. David Golumbia was *the* guy on this history and meticulously documented it)

neither of those orgs had a purpose-trust, they were standard issue nonprofits, easily corruptible by the people in charge.

So many investors and foundations think they can make a short-term investment in media, meanwhile the right has invested in hijacking the information ecosystem for decades.

you invest in nonprofits that have purpose built into their structure so that even if somehow someone who would sell to a rightwing billionaire makes their way into leadership, they wouldn't be able to. AND you invest longterm. This latter bit is the biggest problem, imho.
