Garry Kasparov at Halifax Security Forum:

"For 4 years, Ukraine has been fighting for the whole of Europe. NATO was created to fight one war — not to go to Afghanistan, not to go to Syria — one war: to save free Europe from Russian aggression.

The time for Evermore has passed us, just as an elderly fellow passed me on his x-country skis on the soccer pitch down the block.

Now is the time for White Winter Hymnal:

Kantha in Bengali means cloth, traditionally made from the best parts of old worn saris or dhotis. Also the name of a way of stitching in which variations of running stitch are worked though all the layers of cloth, quilting them together, creating intricate designs #WomensArt

Phone notifications off now. Bliss
So, having done the thing to turn off Smart Features in Gmail in order to neuter it from Gemini, which also eliminates folders, the result makes email utterly useless.

Could this be the end of email? I mean, I might just turn off notifications on my phone.

Which would be...heavenly.

Massive shoutout out to whoever handles the Royal Canadian Air Force’s social media account. They responded to every single comment on their already very solid Trans Day of Remembrance post and they responded like this…

Quite applicable outside defence procurement, too:

"...he would caution us with two words: it depends. ... our conclusions depended on different variables, many of which have a tendency to bounce around. He rarely let us get away with a question or comment that rested on all things being equal."

Alberta's new license plates: sigh

People call it the Valley of the Ten Peaks but one of those peaks claimed the life of a friend, 20+ years ago, and since then I have only called it the Valley of Death.

I already hate this image, gorgeous and all, for its ubiquity. And now even more.

A small but fascinating footnote: This is the episode where *all* the adults realized Mr Snuffleupagus was real.
Years earlier, Buffy Sainte-Marie became the first and originally only adult on Sesame Street able to see Snuffy.
[November 18th, 1985] In the Season 17 premiere of Sesame Street, Episode 2096, the adults on Sesame Street finally meet Mr. Snuffleupagus and realize he is real, not imaginary.

Elmo is also introduced as a new character.
