At today's close of the EU-African Union summit, an important reminder that the EU & AU must act for human rights in conflicts like Sudan prioritizing:
👉Protection of civilians & rights defenders
👉Humanitarian aid & access
👉Accountability for violations

The EU must:
👉Demand RSF to end attacks on civilians
👉Demand UAE to disengage from supporting RSF
👉Fully resource the UN Human Rights Council Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan
👉Extend ICC referral & UNSC arms embargo to all Sudan
👉End sale/supply of arms to conflict parties

We welcome @europarl.europa.eu’s continued efforts, led by @tinekestrik.bsky.social, to protect the rights of the people in Hungary and the EU.

It is clear that protection of the rule of law and human rights in Hungary is essential to the protection of rights across the Union.

The @ec.europa.eu must also strengthen action, including legal challenges and freezing all EU funds to the HU government.

Urgent action is needed by the Commission to stop the criminal investigation of the Pécs Pride organiser.

▪️Use all tools available to defend the EU’s founding principles

Given the continued worsening of the situation, it is now essential for the Council to move from discussion to concrete action.

It’s high time the @ec.europa.eu finally recognized the gravity of this case and for it to translate its supportive words into concrete actions.

Criminalizing Pride organizers has no place in the European Union, or anywhere in the world.

The @ec.europa.eu's inaction has helped pave the way for the current situation, where a human rights defender can become a criminal suspect for organizing a peaceful Pride march.

Despite repeated warnings from civil society and its stated commitment to equality, the @ec.europa.eu has so far failed to take meaningful action in response to Hungary’s escalating restrictions on Pride events.

These measures directly violate EU law, and prosecuting Géza Buzás-Hábel would constitute a violation of his rights, including freedom of peaceful assembly and expression.

Hungary’s ‘anti-Pride’ legislation, allows authorities to:

🔴Ban LGBTIQ+ assemblies
🔴Criminalize organizers up to 1 year in prison
🔴Fine participants up to € 500
🔴Use facial recognition to identify attendees

The Hungarian Prosecutor’s Office must immediately close the criminal proceedings, which violate freedom of peaceful assembly, expression and non-discrimination.

This case exposes an alarming escalation in Hungary’s crackdown on LGBTIQ+ rights and peaceful assembly.

And as European and African leaders meet at next week's EU-AU summit, the human rights and humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC must be high on the agenda.
