Andy and Iori are 100% human, as far as they know. They have friends of different species.

Paige pretends she is, but she's sea folk, specifically nataterran.

Matthew is terranan and works with many types of folk.

Blake is a changeling, Charlie is a vampire, Fran is a werewolf, Peader is a faun.

We hear about Blake before we meet them, and it's none too flattering. They're a nightmare boss, an entitled celebrity, with no care for anyone other than themselves.

My Big Bad is still in development, but Blake is the first 'baddie'. They're a morally grey, complicated asshole who's all bravado.

What are they doing when they appear on the page? Is it meant to be apparent that they are a villain?

What is being showcased about them?

Andy's boss Blake is a shapeshifting faerie who's losing their magic. Andy's flatmate Iori's best friend Paige's brother Matthew is a frog person researcher specialising in humanoid biology and magic. Introducing the two seemed like a beneficial idea for both parties, at first...

How did your character get started on their current line of work/quest? What started them down that path?

Was it a specific choice they made? Serendipity? Was their hand forced by someone? Was it a mistake?

Andy lives with Iori so we see them first. They are very close, not as close as Iori would like them to be.

Paige goes to work and meets the new chef, Asta. She instantly dislikes how proud Asta is of being Sea Folk.

Matthew is fascinated by Blake, the shapeshifting fairy whose magic is failing.

I had several requests for more side character questions! So, let’s talk about the first side character your MC meets on page.

Are they friend or foe? A stranger? Do they stick around or are they fleeting?

As a frog person, Matthew's eyes are golden and he has almost 360 degree vision. He wears contacts in the day, but not at night.

As a shapeshifter, Asta can make her eyes any colour she wants, and she loves to make them change according to her mood.

Andy's autistic, no eye contact, thanks!

Tell me about your character's eyes!

What color are they? Can they see anything others can't? Are they notable in any other way?

How do they feel about making eye contact with others?

Our society has universal basic income, so they're never short for the necessities, but could save up for luxuries.

Andy would pick up some freelance copywriting on the side.

Matthew would sell his blood to vampires, he knows enough who'd pay for a fresh meal.

Iori would just sell feet pics.
Tell me more about your #AwesomeCharacters

What's your character's go to move when they are short on funds?

Extra shifts at work? Ask a friend or relative? Plan a heist?

Or are they wealthy and it's never a problem? Or in a post-money society?

Andy loves his family but they can be a bit loud and a lot. Both his older sisters have kids and his cousins come for the holidays at his parents' house too. Iori only has their mum in the country, but sometimes they'll visit their dad's family for the holidays. For New Year, they'll chill together.

I've got holidays soon, which got me thinking: who would your characters choose to spend their holidays with?

Friends, family, a lover, a combination of these?

Would they want a large gathering or small?

Andy and Iori share a flat and hang out a lot.

Paige shares a small flat with long-time friend Ellie and their tabby named Mog but mostly keep to themselves.

Matthew rents a room from colleague Charlie, who happens to be a vampire.

Asta is staying with family, having recently moved to land.

Andy is lawful good, Iori is chaotic neutral, Asta is chaotic good, Blake is neutral evil. Matthew starts as lawful neutral, moves to neutral evil without realising then probably ends up neutral good. Paige is complicated so I'm unsure, possibly true neutral.

Transportation is moving towards mostly electric. Trams and trains are popular as well as buses and cycle lanes.

Big cities also have swim lanes for frog people and sea folk and flight lanes for avi folk, although older parts of the cities or the further out you get, they can suddenly end.

What methods of transportation do your characters usually use to get around?

Horses, ships (water, space, air), cars, walking, other?

Does transportation ever cause your characters difficulty?

Andy is a people pleaser and low self esteem, but he's working on it.

Iori's ADHD means they sometimes forget self care, but Andy helps.

Paige has repressed self-hatred for her species, sea folk.

Asta believes she shouldn't dim her light but will learn that some people are worth meeting half way.

Andy recoils away from this question in horror.

Iori never stops moving. They teach various classes at the gym.

Paige really likes swimming, but only in her human form. She's faster without her fins, she's had so little practice in her sea folk form.

Matthew used to parkour but now he's an adult.

Andy has worked hard on common tongue fluency in the hope that his writing can be appreciated world wide.

Iori speaks conversational Japanese and wants to improve their Welsh, to feel more of a connection to their dad's lineage.

The prevalance of common speech and basic BSL helps reduce issues.

Does your character speak English? Or another real language?

My current guys are in England, so they all speak English as well as the common tongue, to varying degrees, and basic BSL.

Matthew also speaks the frog-people language, his sea folk sister Paige understands it some, but can't physically produce the sounds. She's not fluent in her own sea dialect.

Andy can use a print map to find points of interest and orient himself.

Iori generally keeps track of which direction they're headed, unless the ADHD kicks in.

Paige stays within her comfort zones.

Asta uses technology on land, instincts in water. She speaks several sea dialects for directions.

How is your character's sense of direction?

Are they good with reading a map, a compass, a sextant? Navigating a city, the ocean, space, or the wilderness?

Paige Stone doesn't think it's unhealthy at all that most of her friends and colleagues don't even know that she's Sea Folk and has a frog-person step-dad and two step-siblings. She believes its a privacy thing and so is trying to protect them and herself from prejudice, but she's internalised it.

Iori Bowen is determined to convince themself that they can live with Andy and just be 'best friends'. They hang out, and cuddle and that's enough for them because Iori's poly so they can get their other needs met elsewhere. So they'll be *fine* without labelling it... Definitely. Probably. Maybe?

Due to delayed puberty and such because he's trans, Andy Daniels is late to realise he's ace. His assumption that he's straight is based on that time he was roped into Spin The Bottle -- the kiss with the girl was acceptable, but the boy who shoved his tongue in Andy's mouth definitely wasn't.

It's a lot more accepted. It's a world where magic is real, shapeshifters exist and some people can change gender or reproduce asexually (frog-people and mer-people). Some people wonder why humans would want to bother, but they're not going to stop and question anyone who's just trying to pee...
