Her father was distant. The doctors shook their heads. But Alma refused to die. She survived. And then she did something nobody expected: she thrived. Alma was small, frail, and partially deaf. In a world obsessed with beauty and conformity, she was neither. She was different. Odd. Bookish. So she turned inward. And discovered she had a gift: language. By her twenties, Alma Karlin had mastered twelve languages. Twelve. She spoke English, French, Italian, Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish, Russian, and more. She created her own multilingual dictionary. She worked as a teacher and translator. But teaching in a small Slovenian town wasn't enough. Alma wanted more. She wanted the world." For the next eight years, Alma Karlin traveled through more than sixty countries across Asia, South America, Oceania, and the Pacific Islands. She rode through the Andes on horseback. She survived malaria in the tropics. She documented Indigenous cultures, studied religions, collected artifacts, and wrote prolifically—sending dispatches back to European newspapers that marveled at her audacity. She traveled through Japan, China, Korea, Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Peru, and dozens more places most Europeans had never heard of. She did it alone. A small, deaf woman with a typewriter, navigating a world that told her she didn't belong." "She wrote about everything she saw—the people, the landscapes, the customs. Her observations were sharp, empathetic, curious. She didn't just observe—she immersed herself. She learned local languages. She stayed with families. She participated in rituals. She wasn't a tourist. She was a witness. In 1927, after eight years on the road, Alma returned to Celje. She expected recognition. Perhaps even celebration. Instead, she was met with suspicion. Her neighbors whispered. The woman who traveled alone? Who lived with "strange" people? Who brought back "pagan" artifacts? They called her a witch. Her massive collection—thousands of objects from around the world, carefully documented and cataloged—was dismissed as occult, dangerous, unnatural. Then the political situation darkened. When the Nazis occupied Slovenia during World War II, Alma's German heritage—and her refusal to conform—made her a target. She was arrested. Interrogated. Her writings were scrutinized for disloyalty. After the war, Tito's partisans distrusted her for being too German, too intellectual, too independent. She was too much for everyone. And not enough for anyone. The only person who truly understood Alma was Thea Schreiber Gamelin, an artist who became her companion, her partner, and the love of her life. They lived together openly—two women defying every social expectation. In a conservative, post-war society, their relationship was scandalous. But they didn't hide. Alma and Thea created a "Cabinet of Curiosities" in their home—a museum of Alma's travels, filled with masks, textiles, sculptures, and artifacts from around the world. It was her life's work. Her legacy. On January 14, 1950, Alma Karlin died of cancer at the age of 60. She died in obscurity. Her books were out of print. Her collection was neglected. Her name was spoken as a warning—eccentric, strange, not to be emulated." "After her death, locals whispered that her artifacts were cursed. Some were stolen. Others were destroyed. Children were told stories about the "mad woman" who brought dark magic back from distant lands. For decades, Alma Karlin was erased. But history has a way of correcting itself. In the 1990s, scholars began rediscovering Alma's writings. Her travelogues were republished. Historians recognized her as one of the first female solo travelers to document the world with such depth and nuance. Her Cabinet of Curiosities was restored and put on permanent display in the Celje Regional Museum. In 2015, a statue of Alma Karlin was unveiled in Celje. It shows her sitting with her typewriter, Erika, gazing toward the horizon. Today, Alma is celebrated as a Slovenian icon—a pioneering traveler, writer, linguist, and feminist who refused to be confined by gender, nationality, or expectation. But for fifty years after her death, she was forgotten. Dismissed. Called a witch. Because she dared to travel alone. Because she loved a woman. Because she brought back objects that people didn't understand. Because she refused to be small, quiet, & obedient. Alma Karlin was told she wouldn't survive her first night. She survived. And then she spent eight years circling the globe, documenting cultures, learning languages, & proving that women belonged everywhere men did. She was arrested by Nazis. Distrusted by communists. Called mad by her neighbors. Her life's work was treated as witchcraft. But she never stopped being herself. Today, schoolchildren in Slovenia learn her name. Travelers visit her statue. Her books are studied in universities. Alma Karlin was a woman who refused to be confined. And the world, finally, is catching up. They said she wouldn't survive birth. She traveled to 60 countries alone—with only a typewriter. The Nazis arrested her. Her town called her a witch. She died forgotten. Today, she has a statue. Her name is Alma Karlin. And history finally remembers her."

If you're feeling overwhelmed, it's intentional. They're calling it "flooding the zone." The intent is to overwhelm and exhaust us so we can not effectively resist. Something simple you can do right now now is to make sure to take breaks and rest.
