There's a personality type that enjoys abusing power over others and deals with shame (usually due to a strict religious upbringing) by deflecting what shames them most on others to prove they couldn't possibly be one of "those" demonized Bad People.

She was born female and was magically turned into a boy. When the magic is undone:
“I hope none of you will care less for me than you did before. I’m just the same Tip, you know; only—only—”
“Only you’re different!” said the Pumpkinhead; and everyone thought it was the wisest speech he had ever made

Ozma is MTF trans. It's pretty blatant even in the original 1904 book.

The 2nd book of The Wizard of Oz (The Marvelous Land of Oz) focuses on her. Near the end, she comes out as trans to everyone

The thing that disappointed me about Ozma as a kid was that after her first appearance she retained nothing of Tip's wonderfully curious and mischievous character. Baum immediately turned her into an Art Nouveau art object and that was that.

Whereas you look at the art queer people make about ourselves and it's more likely to be either straightforward or subtle. "I saw the TV glow" seemed to outright go over the head of a lot of cishets who watched it. Steven Universe mostly talks in metaphors. It's an interesting contrast, dunno

I mean, I do have an agenda! I very much do have an agenda. But also like… I dunno, when straight or cis people try to make agenda pieces for gay/trans people they tend to miff it a bit? Like just go heavy handed sometimes in a way that can feel a bit uncomfortable.

Funny- my mom had all those books. We read them all and I don’t recall Ozma’s gender storyline at all. 😂 Clearly wasn’t pertinent to me.

That was borderline true of the first book and film, where Glinda and the Wicked Witch were obviously far more powerful than the Wizard.

Not just the trans storyline, but the two most powerful armies in Oz seem to be made up entirely of women.

"Shirley Temple, having reportedly been considered for the role of Dorothy Gale in the 1939 movie musical The Wizard of Oz but passed over in favor of Judy Garland, eventually portrayed Princess Ozma in a 1960 television production of The Marvelous Land of Oz, in which she also portrayed Tip." -wiki

The Emerald City series handled her pretty great. She's played by the same actress in both forms, made up to look very convincingly like a boy as Tip.

I was a big fan of the children's librarian in my home town but could not understand why she wouldn't get any of the later Oz books. It may have been that they were politically suspect or it may have been the gender bending. Maybe both.

I forget which book, but the Tin man goes to the guy who made his metal body, who kept all his original body parts. Tin man has a talk with his former severed head. It's kind of a Theseus' Ship deal. Is the Tinman who he thinks he is or is rebuilt into something new?

I am not trans but my conservative Christian parents *did* let me check out the Oz books from the library when I was 8 and I read them all. Ozma cracked my mind open in ways they had no idea about, from then on I could no longer stomach the regressive gender politics of their church. Powerful stuff!

Ozma has been my favorite since I first read the books. I fear no movie would ever give her the treatment she deserves.🍸

I guess there's a hostile reading of the film where the reason they put Ozma in the sanatorium is because she kept claiming she was a girl
