IV DOCUMENTARY FEATURE sugarcanefilm We are so proud of our team and community. We're also thrilled for our friends who made No Other Land for their important film and well deserved win last night. We wanted to share some of the words we had written: SWIPE Em: For over a century Indigenous kids were taken from their families and forced to attend boarding schools designed to annihilate their way of life. THIS the untold origin story of North America. As we look out at a world on fire, people once again losing their homes and being separated from loved ones, truth and art stand as final guards against tyranny and oppression. Our fellow nominees have lived that mission from Ukraine to Japan, Congo to Palestine. Thank you to the Academy, National Geographic Documentary Films and our executive producers for insisting that this story matters and to our brilliant team for helping us tell it: Kellen, Chris, Nathan, Maya, Mali and to Julian, the first filmmaker Indigenous to this land to ever be nominated for an Academy Award Jules: Before the Indian residential schools took away our language, my people would greet the day and one another with a simple but profound acknowledgment: tsecwínucw-kuc. It means "We survived the night." (That one's for all the nominees.) This industry, like this society, was built telling stories about Indians dying at the end of guns pointed by cowboys. No more. Thank you to the Academy for seeing and celebrating our survivors. To my auntie Charlene, Chief Willie, my dad Ed and those who are no longer with us: Kris and Chief Rick. This is for you. My wife, Rep. Zooey Zephyr, is working her ass off in the Montana legislature, railing against bill after bill, day after day. This is just one of many speeches I've watched her give... but it's one of the most powerful.

This on a bill that criminalizes us for being trans.

3. Under current law, indecent exposure requires intent, such as deliberately streaking across a field or flashing bystanders. However, this bill removes the requirement of intent when applied to transgender individuals, making it possible to criminalize them for existing in certain public spaces.
