So.... does it, actually? 🤷

Anybody studying this yet? 🤔 Oh, look at this! "Measuring the Impact of Early-2025 AI on Experienced Open-Source Developer Productivity" by Becker at al.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

To the #biologging community : I'm looking for GPS or GPS-TDR tags transmitting data through Argos or Iridium and depth-rated to 200m. Also not crazily expensive... 😅
Any suggestion?

All this plastic is making my head spin. I don’t think one can grasp the amount of our own produced junk you can find in sable shearwaters. All the pieces here (60g - 778 pieces) were in one (1!!!) chick. That’s roughly 20% of its body weight. @adriftlab.bsky.social @thelabandfield.bsky.social

I made a list of folks who work in ocean science and conservation, post stuff that’s interesting to non-experts in those fields (like my students,) and post regularly.

Give them a follow to get more ocean on your feed.

I am always adding to this list. But please don’t ask me to add you.

Over 1,300 US Dept of Education staff were just fired today. They helped manage student loans, grants, and financial aid for college. Another 572 staff resigned in the last month.

Without the Dept of Education there's no way in hell I would have been able to afford college. #dumptrump

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds.

This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

My god
Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut.

This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

Fucking horrendous.
Margaret is one of several colleagues I’m losing at 1:00p today, including one of my best friends who finally got his dream job 5 months ago. Fuck all of this.
Please let the GEO/EAR community know: Program Directors and Mission Support who’ve been at NSF under two years were just terminated via Zoom. Even those of us whose offer letter stated one probationary year and whose government data states “permanent”.
