As a 16 yo, Eon blew my mind. I reread them recently and was pleased that they hadn't dated badly, despite the fact that the story starts in a near future 1999 and the USSR is still a thing. You'd think that would date it, yeah? Read on.

Have you read much Greg Bear? Eon and Eternity are possibly my two most favourite scifi novels.

Banks was awesome. Still feel sad that I'll never read another new Culture novel.

Rajaniemi is great too. His trilogy was the last time I read a new scifi author and didn't find it overly derivative.

For most of my adult life I've been a big fan of Ian Banks scifi output and I imagine a Banksian Culture Mind would be in fits of giggles at us calling LLMs AI.
