So now we loop back around. The use of inflatable costumes in protest has been applauded by many commenters in the don't-give-him-what-he-wants camp, held out as a shining example of how to protest "right," in a way that doesn't give Trump an "excuse" to federalize the Guard. Unfortunately, in the veritable seat of the Inflatable Protest Movement, it turns out that Donald Trump and his judges don't give a fuck how people are protesting, and will say that flashlights shining in the very scared ICE agents' eyes is enough to justify a military presence. There is no form of protest that will protect you from an authoritarian deciding to be authoritarian. We would all be far better served by showing up in whatever capacity feels right to us, and refusing to police other protestors. Policing protest not only harms solidarity-building, it accepts a false premise: that there is a "wrong" way to protest your government disappearing people to uncertain fates. 9 I've noticed an additional troubling trend in discourse, which is people responding to my statement that we should not police protest in this moment by saying that they "disagree" with me because they support nonviolent protest. I, too, support (and exclusively engage in) nonviolent protest, and arguing that we should avoid policing allies as they figure out how to resist an authoritarian state is not a call for violent protest. This response speaks to a deeply engrained desire to police oneself and others

I appreciate this characterization of the Republican Party from Public Notice today in the article on the success of the No Kings protest. Essentially, they’re trolls. No principles, yes power.
The Republican Party has increasingly come to define itself by what and whom it hates. If some new issue bursts into public awareness, they won't know what they think until they find out what position Democrats were taking so they can take the opposite one. They're anti-anti-racism, and anti-anti-climate change, and all it takes to get them to denounce something is to tell them liberals like it. They'll even get worked up about a corporate logo if a bunch of bots tell them it's woke, apparently because the Founding Fathers would never have stood for sans serif fonts. So calling this event (and the larger movement it seeks to create) "No Kings" turns out to have been a stroke of genius, because Trump's response was to essentially say Yeah, I'm the king — and because I'm the king, I can poop on people! After so many years one would think he had lost the ability to shock, but no - generative Al slop tools give Trump a whole new way to act like a petulant toddler.

Wore my new ($4 find in the fair sale bin) t-shirt that was perfect for this week to the #Loons game. (Originally from 2020…) Really proud of #MNUFC for acknowledging this local moment. Players wore armbands, no cheering or chants for the first 4 minutes, and an amazing tifo that made me cry.

Amber, what brought you hope today? It was a @nycjayjay.bsky.social piece in The Big Picture (linked in comments). The entire piece, but particularly the standards set by grand juries. Look at this stat!
That in itself is an incredibly rare thing; grand juries almost always return true bills of indictment in cases brought by law enforcement, given that the standard is simply "probable cause" that a crime has been committed. But as The New Republic reported in July, [Ojut of the 38 felony cases filed by Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, only seven have resulted in indictments. In a recent case, the grand jury refused to indict a protester accused of attacking federal law enforcement officials. And Trump's prosecutor was not happy: The Times described "screaming" that was "audible" from outside the grand jury room coming from Essayli. It you're doing the math, that's a batting verage of just 18 percent, when normally round 99 percent of cases brought before grand juries return an indictment.
