A related point wrt China is that US has probably not faced a foreign power capable of exerting countervailing economic pressure on US domestic economy to such an extent since 1970s OPEC. Weaponized interdependence after that had massively asymmetric political costs for US (until now?).
I think some of the people arguing that deep economic entanglement between countries does not rule out wars are not making an “alas, but” case but rather a case to avoid deep economic entanglement precisely because it raises the cost of engaging in (their view necessary) wars.
