I want to thank Commission Chair Ben Henderson and the Edmonton Police Commission for their thoughtful work in this process. Their leadership - and the input of our community - was essential in this appointment.

I’d like to thank Minister Eleanor Olszewski from the Government of Canada, and Minister Dan Williams from the Government of Alberta for making this funding possible and for recognizing the importance of helping municipalities manage growth across the country.

This funding will help break down barriers to increase housing supply, support Edmonton’s relative affordability, and ensure our communities remain liveable as they densify.

However, building homes is only part of the equation when it comes to managing this kind of growth.

Today’s announcement from the Government of Canada - a significant $60 million investment through the Canada Community-Building Fund - will help our communities grow in sustainable, practical ways.

Edmonton is leading the country in housing starts, development, and affordability. In the last four years, we have built more affordable housing than in the entire previous decade. This agreement builds on that record of action.

By approving this agreement, we can now move forward with the long-awaited demolition of the Coliseum - a decision delayed for years - which will finally unlock prime land for high-quality housing and new opportunities in Northeast Edmonton.

Two thousand five hundred new housing units at the Village at ICE District plus, the development of the Public Event Park, will ensure that vitality and investment in our core continues.

Downtown needs more people living, working, and gathering. This year alone we welcomed 3 million people to the core for festivals, exhibitions, concerts, and sporting events.

Through years of collaboration with the Government of Alberta and the Oilers Entertainment Group, this agreement more than triples every municipal dollar invested.

By focusing on shovel-ready lands and sectors where we have natural strengths, we’re making smart, strategic investments that will pay off long-term for our city and region.

Growing our industrial tax base means less pressure on residential property taxes, helping keep your cost of living more affordable.

It also means more local jobs, more vibrant communities, and a stronger economy.

The IIAP focuses on accelerating growth in key sectors like advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, clean technology, and logistics. All industries that create good jobs and attract investment to our city.

This funding continues to have a profound impact on housing supply in Edmonton, and we look forward to implementing more aspects of our Housing Accelerator Fund Action Plan in the future.

On behalf of the City of Edmonton, I’d like to thank the Federal Government and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for their help in supporting this incentive through the Housing Accelerator Fund.

Through the Downtown Student Housing Incentive, we will help create an estimated 500 new rentals designed for students and offered at prices they can afford, close to campus and near amenities such as libraries and transit.

Post-secondary institutions are expanding in downtown Edmonton, drawing thousands of students into the core. Currently, Edmonton’s downtown is home to over 47,000 students.
