Everything I try to type about today sounds placating and placid. So I will keep it simple.

Fuck Trump, fuck Elon, fuck the US "government".

Good night ✌️

Waiting at the emergency vet tonight and my kindle died an hour in while trying to finish my book club book.
Phone currently at 20%.
And it’s freaking freezing.

My worst bookish bad habit is probably that, when I’m reading hard covers, I only use the dust jacket flaps as a bookmark 👀😃

What’s yours?

when i taught a writing workshop i told students to go to a bookstore and watch ppl browse. “what happens? you pick up a book. you read the front, the back, and a few sentences of the first page? right? that’s why. anyone can tell by the first paragraph whether the book will work for them or not."
For the writers upset that one short fiction editor can tell within the first few sentences if a story is a "no," I have even worse news for you:

This is nearly all short fiction editors.
Authors! Submitting your story to an open call? As someone reading through 400+ submissions for an anthology, some tips:

Opening paragraph/sentence: I can tell within the first few sentences if a story is a 'no.'

'Maybes' turn to 'no's' by the end of the first paragraph. Brutal, but it's true.
