wow!

Sadly I've learned to respond to the feeling that "surely someone in a high place is doing this obviously necessary thing" with "yeah, probably not."

it's so bad. but it also seems to really illustrate that the people well-suited to climb to the tops of existing systems aren't the ones who are best-suited to recognize the need for and conceive of new ones.

not saying you need to do anything in particular, just that everyone and all our institutions seem so shell-shocked that they aren't doing the things that ground-level people know are utterly necessary.

these points are so good and I wouldn't be so sure. at least in my areas when I ask about specific planning about how to rebuild, even the most well-connected and highly-placed say, "yeah, good idea. no one is doing that. maybe you should!"

I've been very scared to learn how little the tradition and rationale for academic freedom seems to have penetrated many health science disciplines.

Just observing among my colleagues, I see an axis reflecting degree of socialization into accepting strong external constraints/incentives on scholarship (for example in bench and health sciences) and then another axis reflecting degree of socialization into the tradition of academic freedom.

I have been wondering about this so hard.
