Good literary translation requires understanding (language, culture, genre--on both sides of the translation) and an ability to write well. "AI" can't do that. There are no shortcuts. Treat your work and foreign language readers with the respect they deserve. You won't fool anyone with this.

I had such a beautiful moment today in a zoom meeting. During a script discussion, I was trying to recall a Romani song written during the Holocaust and someone in the meeting started singing it. It's so great to be on a team of Romani creators doing what I tried to do alone over ten years ago.

I spent this morning reading through testimonies of Romani Holocaust survivors, newly translated for the first time. These accounts form part of a documentary series we’re developing in partnership with Yale Fortunoff and the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture.
