Gestalt: Steam & Cinder: 3/5
A story heavy action rpg with movement upgrades that happens to allow you to return to previous areas (not a metroidvania)
Control and art direction are great. Combat can be frustrating. Story is predictable and unfinished.

Fishing Mega-Game:
A surprising standout, the creature collector aspect serves to give content even approaching Vampire Survivors compared to other VS-likes. An overworld with npcs add a nice texture to the whole thing.

SANGRA:
This is an honest survival horror with a touch of modern controls. Corridors are tight, ammo is tight, inventory is tight, keys will have you backtrack and memorize the building's layout.

Kotama And Academy Citadel:
A metroidvania that's fun to move around in. Parries + fluid detonation can change the flow of combat when you need to take on certain enemies without getting in your way.

Storebound:
You and your muppet (claymation?) friends are trapped in an infinite IKEA, everything is wrong and it's getting increasingly worse.

Vital Shell: @VitalShellGame
This Brotato-like is bleeding with Fromsoft-esque psx charm and jungle beats. While the wave an upgrade systems are similar to Brotato it's weapon and stats are appreciably different with a leveling meta progression.

Homura Hime:
A Nier inspired action game that feels good in the hand. Combos are, so far, precanned so don't expect DMC combo expression. There's some jank with cutscenes and the music could use more oomph.

I figured out what the new party mode in Vampire Survivors was meant for.

Wicked Seed: @deadrightgames.bsky.social
A hard sell but I had fun with the mesh of real-time and command actions. Combat is real-time with pause. Move around, block/parry but actions like attacking, items and skills cost stamina and lock you in an animation.

One of the rabbit holes was just Hiroto Saitoh. He worked with Kogado through the 90's on JP exclusive tactics games for pc. Maybe best known for POWER DoLLs, little of his work made it westward. I like his use of percussion.

So I've been updating my video game playlist for the last 3 weeks or so and fell down a couple rabbit holes. I tended towards more obscure games or those in my blindspots so I wanted to take the time to highlight my findings in a thread. 🎶🧵

I find it kind of a shame that a lot of people won't experience this both because of it's content and lack of marketing. In short playing Paradiso Guardian feels like this meme. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
April 28, 2025 at 5:52 AM
A complaint I had with Wonder Labyrinth was that all the rooms felt like hallways. Paradiso doesn't have this problem. Zones and even some rooms are distinct enough that one could learn where they are without a map. Not quite as distinct as SotN or Bloodstained though.
April 28, 2025 at 5:52 AM
The devs clearly played SotN. The MC has Alucard's run cycle. 90% of the enemies are near 1:1 copies, flying swords, Alraune, rock thrower, big hammer guy, giant ghost head. Some tilesets are close, the caves even have SotN's waterfall room just bigger.

NOW HEAR ME OUT! All NSFW content is locked behind "Naughty Angel Mode" which you can disable from the title screen before you even see a character. This is how I played and the only remaining vestiges was character designs. No 'scenes', no nudity, some implications.
