Everything about the criminal legal system is pretend We pretend cops solve crimes, that punishment is justice, that the system cares about ppl, that the money isn't better spent elsewhere

Yeah, I don't think we need to pretend there's no problem with violent crime in DC—of course there is, even if the trends are in the right direction. But it's ludicrous to think that deploying a bunch of DEA Agents & National Guardsmen as beat cops hassling residents is a rational response.

my mother got interviewed in the local paper once before she died about her experience living with ALS and having to confront her mortality, and my favorite thing she said was: "my kids are good. they're good to each other. all the rest is just stuff."

The vague feeling of "unsafe" is what 50+ years of criminal justice policy is based on White ppl's sense of vibes are more important than objective reality
this is an embarrassing thing for this guy to say in public but also touches on something that constantly rankles me, which is the vague idea of "feeling unsafe" as a problem that someone else needs to solve for you regardless of whether you are actually unsafe or not
