It was on-off for centuries before the problem was solved for good (?). The most obvious lasting effect of it is their funerary customs. Other effects include the unification of the country (grossly simplified and there are other causes), and various other cultural quirks.

They have had an outsize influence on all cultures on the northern continents. One was their writing, and the other, all their technological advancements that everyone copied or tried to copy.
What happened to them is pretty clear. It's a pretty Roman empire situation.

and many other things besides (they lasted a few millennia). In the end, they sort of petered out and got absorbed into other civilizations and transformed, slowly, in the wake of certain events that decimated their population.
