Sometimes we can spot Aspergillus directly from clinical samples. This is a sputum from a patient with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis.

Working with the Brazilian Ministry of Health to treat patients with Jorge Lobo Disease. Most of the patients are illiterate and live in the amazon forest. Some say that lesions appeared after contact with bamboo thorns. The bamboo is called “taboca” in the region.

Jorge Lobo’s disease is a neglected disease. People from the amazon forest get infected by the fungus Paracoccidioides lobogeorgii. Skin lesions may transform to squamous cell carcinoma. We don’t know yet the best antifungal treatment for that.

My wife, kids, and I are colonized by that bug. My eldest daughter got hospitalized and had a large face abscess drained. We did our third decolonization procedure. Tired of it! CA-MRSA sucks!

We need to be fast to treat mucormycosis. Sadly this patient had a late diagnosis. He died after 2 months spent in the hospital, having had 4 surgeries and a ton of liposomal amphoterin.
