Working with the Brazilian Ministry of Health to treat patients with Jorge Lobo Disease. Most of the patients are illiterate and live in the amazon forest. Some say that lesions appeared after contact with bamboo thorns. The bamboo is called “taboca” in the region.

Jorge Lobo’s disease is a neglected disease. People from the amazon forest get infected by the fungus Paracoccidioides lobogeorgii. Skin lesions may transform to squamous cell carcinoma. We don’t know yet the best antifungal treatment for that.

We need to be fast to treat mucormycosis. Sadly this patient had a late diagnosis. He died after 2 months spent in the hospital, having had 4 surgeries and a ton of liposomal amphoterin.

Maned wolf is rarely spotted in Brazil. It is an endangered species. In Minas Gerais state there is a church in the middle of a natural reserve that they visit at night to get some fresh meat provided by the local priest.
