stede gave up his wealth at the end of s1 but s2 has this quiet motif of him repeating that decision over and over and over again. wanting to earn a big ship to impress ed then giving up on that. getting the cursed suit and giving it up. getting his cool unique sword and then losing it.

ourflagmeansgayrights Jun 23, 2024 incredibly mild fandom pet peeve that doesn't actually bother me but i do Notice™ when it happens: when a fic (usually an AUs but sometimes a post-canon fic) borrows the "hey. you wanna do something weird?" line and then ed and stede go and do something completely normal like go on a cute date or some shit like that. weaksauce odd behavior. those two should be making random people stare at them in confusion. the audience needs to be Perplexed. make those men weirder. ourflagmeansgayrights Jun 23, 2024 important elements of the gentlebeard outfit swap scene: 1. ed and stede are doing a weird bit (swapping clothes and pretending to be each other) 2. they are doing this bit in public, or at the very least in front of a small crowd of people (going on deck and announcing themselves, making everyone stop what they're doing to pay attention to them) 3. most crucially: Absolutely Nobody Else Thinks This Bit Is Funny Except For Them (everyone witnessing this is baffled. except for izzy, who becomes apoplectic with rage)
