I'm really pleased to have been able to contribute a chapter to The Double Empathy Reader and extremely grateful to Dr Milton for giving space to the discussion of parent-carer blame. My chapter examines how a lack of double empathy can result in the misappropriation of safeguarding concern.

Have you been subject to FII allegations (Uk)? Cathie Long, with Daniel Cooper, Human Rights Lawyer, wants to hear from families who’ve had negative impacts from unjustified FII referral. If you/your child is neurodivergent this is also relevant. To discuss further contact:DanielC@ikpsolicitors.com

The use of #parentalblame within #autism provision.
Published in 2023:

* The use of parental blame is widespread within public service disability provision.

* Autistic / ND (lone) mothers are seemingly MORE at risk from receiving blame (particularly in relation to safeguarding procedures).

Research report published:
Survey participants with a formal diagnosis of autism were three times more likely to be accused of FII than non-autistic parents participating.
Parents of autistic children may be at higher risk of child protection proceedings:

How appropriate is it to label parents of #autistic children 'permissive'?

I challenge this commonly used blaming narrative in my November newsletter: alicerunning.substack.com

Here we go again with media exposure of appalling mistreatment of very vulnerable children, and policy makers declaring "this is intolerable - never again".

Legislation *passed in 2009* must now be commenced, as a first step in protecting children.

Following the BBC reporting of abusive seclusions + restraints within specialist provision, here are some people and organisations that challenge such practices:

Content warning. Heartbreaking.
But, the reason so many of us do what we do.
This isn't acceptable any more, as a system, is it.

Horrific stories of abuse of autistic children within school settings via BBC today. Seclusion+restraint practices systemic in 'specialist' provisions. Like many other families, my son affected in primary school - restraint left bruising, he never went back to school following.

I'm reading a research paper (awful deficit language) that finds permissive parenting does not affect 'internalising behaviours' in autistic children. Many parents told by SWs that their permissive style (no boundaries) affects school attendance. I wish I had found this much sooner.

This is a hugely important report that highlights how broken our systems are. Many of these are families of #disabled or #neurodivergent children or parents, who sought help & support & instead had their #humanrights violated. This has to stop.

A new report from the Children and Families Truth Commission has mapped human rights violations against families in the British child protection systems.

Yes. And often with SS and Camhs interventions escalating crisis. Valuable work from Viv Dawes here.
Families of autistic children in burnout, are time and time again being threatened by social services and CAMHs teams and even told their child will be sectioned - because of an increase in meltdowns (a sign of burnout).
I won’t stop fighting until autistic burnout is officially recognised by all.

Ah! So much personal experience of this and similar. Well done to these families for speaking up. Parents share with me how their challenge to LA delay can also be met with safeguarding allegations in a bid to silence etc.

Hello :) Lovely to see so many familiar people + accounts over here. Thanks for the follows! I'm not brilliant at keeping up with social media posting, but do try my best. I'm currently working on a chapter inclusion for a neuroinclusive social work handbook where I'll be writing about parent-blame.
