@aliceeardley.bsky.social on how the skills white paper's pledge to introduce a new 'stepping stone' qualification for GCSE English and maths resit students - proposed earlier this year by her organisation, Get Further – could shift the dial for resits

Finally, a real stepping stone for GCSE English and maths learners
For students struggling through GCSE resits, this stepping stone qualification could be the breakthrough they need

New DfE report showing the net present value of different qualifications. Note the largest benefit cost ratios are for learning at & below level 2. Definitely wouldn't want to be cutting further education & adult skills based on this... assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/67adc0...

Such a disappointing move. The 8.5 million adults in the UK with low levels of literacy and numeracy deserve better than this. feweek.co.uk/fury-as-dfe-...

Great to be able to start 2025 with some positive reflections on post-16 English and maths and on @getfurther.bsky.social’s position on what we can do to support even more learners to achieve the grades they want and deserve: feweek.co.uk/more-targete...
The key to GCSE resit success is more targeted interventions
A one-year ‘GCSE step’ course would better support those GCSE resit students that have fallen furthest behind

A complete no-brainer! Education funding drops off a cliff post 16 and the introduction of a 16-19 Student Premium would go part way to addressing this. Really good to see so many people agree
It would be one way we could make it slightly easier for those who want to stay in education to be able to do so.

Lots of support for an extension of FSM to include children up to age 19.

We are excited to announce Professor Jason Arday as our new Patron! 🎉 After overcoming illiteracy in his late teens with support from his college, Jason became one of the youngest professors ever appointed at Oxbridge. His story demonstrates that it's never too late to thrive in education.
