That's normal and reasonable for this setting, right?

Every time I make a knife handle, I have extra material. I've been pouring it into molds. Calling these green ones my "Mountain Dewdrops." They take about 2 hours to shape and polish.

The Mountain Dewdrops glow in the dark when supercharged with a blacklight!

Progression. I made the knife on the right two years ago. It was my first time crafting a blade that thin.
Two filet knives, unalike in dignity. The knife on the left is polished to a mirror shine, with a glossy red handle and teal pins. The knife on the right has hammer and scale marks running its curved blade. Its handle is less refined, made from teal G10 with orange pins. The orange blade liner shows through the chamfer at the top.

A bar knife for paring citrus with a split grip between pink resin and dark walnut. A brass raven pin gleams from the walnut section. The blade is hammered and naturally pitted with an antique oxide finish. Two knives, a 10" filet and small bar knife, glow under a blacklight. The filet closed orange, while the bar knife is a mix of pink and green. The 10" filet knife lays across an anvil so you can see the teal and white blade liner stripes.

Spent days making these walnut/resin scales with an orange sandwich stripe. Drilled and shaped them today while I etched the blade with ferric chloride acid.
Smoky sanded pink resin and dark walnut scales (handle blanks for a full tang knife). They have an orange stripe and liner. A blade with an antique oxide rough-hammered finish, taped to the bundle of scales with painter's tape. Post drilling, we see the knife with the antique oxide finish pinned to the scales to check the fit. Though you can barely see it, the knife is clamped in 4 places while it dries. 2 part epoxy has leaked out in places, and will be sanded off.

Tempering, polishing and gluing up knives today!
Orange hot metal, glimpsed through the glory hole of a lit forge. This is a paring knife, shaped with an ergo finger grip. Three knives in various states arranged atop an anvil. The hori hori knife is still rough, as is the chef's knife, but the paring knife in the center gleams with fresh polish. I deliberately left in some hammer and scale marks because I love that look. A long filet knife, its blade covered in painter's tape and handle obscured by clamps. It will have double striped orange red scales with teal pins when it's done!

Birthday card for a dear friend, featuring a nice custom envelope liner! Loving how the wax seal turned out.

Alex White's Alex Kitko and the Mechas from Space (Orbit, 464 pages, $23) is exactly as splashy and fun as its title suggests. In the future, massive killer robots are bearing down on the planet Earth. Their mission: destroy all human life. But some robots have turned traitor, vowing to protect humanity no matter the cost. But they need help: specifically, they need August Kitko, a jazz pianist and —apparently saviour of humankind. Wildly imaginative and hugely entertaining, the book is an absolute joy to read. It's like a rock opera: colourful and energetic, with larger-than-life characters and elaborate set-pieces that make your jaw drop. Or, to put it in one word: wow.

The giant Vanguard mecha Greymalkin towers over a futuristic Port Hercule in Monaco. Buildings like lit glass needles jut upward from the cliffs, showering the city with light. Some new calligraphy today!
