Webdev by day, gamedev by night. Here be video games and stuff I should be too old to care about, I'll leave the war on my 𝕏 profile (same handle). 🇺🇦➜🇫🇷➜🇺🇦, reads/writes 🇬🇧 🇫🇷 🇺🇦, reads 🇪🇸 (just barely though). Posts are my own.
If the above video seems like no big deal, look how ridiculous it is during the final boss battle. The moment I let go of the "left" button, Sonic hops back and look how far he hops!

I think it has something to do with sensor placements that change depending on whether Sonic is on a slope or not.

BTW, I just tried out the Linux install script. It works like a charm.

Two small warnings though:
- Disconnect extra screens if you have them before you run the game.
- The default control scheme is arrows, not WASD, which goes to show you how old this game is :) .

In the meantime, have some doodles :) . The first is the now-removed Coin box. The second is the emblem box. The third one is the emblem in a slightly higher definition.

All three in both S1 and S2 variants. The difference in palettes is both a stylistic choice and a technical necessity :) (11/11)

But hey, that's all for later. Right now, I have the Sonic 1 engine to polish and the Sonic 2 content to implement. But at least, the Coin shop with the cards and stuff is something I won't need to think about anymore.

I'll maybe leave that idea for an original game I'll work on after this. (10/11)

I plan on adding a gallery where pictures of zones, badniks, bosses etc will be unlocked along with some flavor text just by playing the game.

As for hints, those about gimmicks like the hang glider will be unlocked from the start and those about the Chaos Emeralds' locations won't be put in.(9/11)

Not too intrusive, not too foreign to the series' spirit and ultimately possible to get all in one go (one go per game, that is).

Rewards TBD. I have some ideas, but I'd rather focus on finishing remaking the games themselves first.

As for my ideas for what the cards would've been... (8/11)

Ultimately, I think this is what I'm going to do here. Add emblems like in Adventure games. One for finishing each Zone. One per secret box found. One for fulfilling each special objective (getting all Chaos Emeralds in both games, getting all 1-UPs and winning all Special Stages in Sonic 1) (7/11)

And recently I just thought "screw it" and ditched the concept altogether. I still liked the idea of having one new secret to find per Act, so instead of being completely gone, the Coin boxes were replaced with boxes featuring a Sonic Adventure-styled emblem, only with a star on it. (6/11)

BTW, if I stuck with booster packs, the card with instructions on how to use the hang glider in Sky High Zone would've been hardcoded to be unlocked first :) .

I know how infamous it was and I don't even remember how I learned how to use it when I was a kid. (5/11)

I didn't know how to "sell" them though. Allowing to buy them one by one would've taken the randomness out of it. But then, "selling" booster packs felt like a big-time fake longevity scheme that had less and less to do with Sonic the more I thought about it. It screamed "nobody will care". (4/11)

The player would then spend coins in a shop to buy extra lives or to get cards. Each card would be a picture of a badnik, a boss or a zone, a hint about how to handle certain gimmicks or where to find Chaos Emeralds, or a bit of trivia. I ended up coming up with 160 of them. (3/11)

based on their progress in the game, as well as, of course, found and destroyed Coin boxes. And there would be an emphasis on the latter, like if you broke 5 of them, obtained coins would be doubled, if 10, tripled. Coins could also come up on the Bonus Panel instead of Eggman, to add to that.(2/11)

Games like these are a good example of why I'll never knock games for their length. I think I only found the courage to 100% it because it is short.

A good time was had, definitely would recommend.

It's a good time. So much different from the famous 1986 adaptation. Both classics.

So far, I've bought two used DS Lites. Both have cracked hinges. One broke off completely, I managed to save the other with a strategically placed drop of superglue.

The second one also has a crooked bottom screen.

Between that and being able to use a USB charger, I'll pick a new machine any day.
