My older daughter learned to ride a bike today. She was so happy. As she was riding, she said, “I feel free.” My heart is full.

Apparently, Trump’s EPA is saying that Salt Lake City’s air quality is now compliant with federal standards. Our mayor celebrated the news. My lungs and eyes beg to disagree #wherearethemountains

Hot take: for all the hate they get, cybertrucks might be actually safer than most trucks for pedestrians and cyclists because they’re significantly lower than most other trucks sold today

Starting to see academic job ads that say specifically universities aren’t paying for HB1 visas. I feel really bad for international PhD students, especially those on the job market this year.

Cool new natural playground in Salt Lake City along the Jordan River. I remember seeing some of those playgrounds in Northern Europe, and they were super popular.
This new playground, open space marks a milestone for Salt Lake City
A new open space marks the first completed project tied to an $85 million bond that Salt Lake residents approved three years ago. It could also help in a transformation of the Jordan River.

Hearing about a new wild trend about AI use in academia: Researchers take someone else's paper, use AI to paraphrase it (and sometimes make small edits), and then submit it to a peer-reviewed journal. Many get caught, but some probably get away with that.

Fundamental piece about foundations supporting groups that oppose zoning reform. Since 2018, 15 large foundations have given $260 million to California nonprofits that have opposed pro-housing bills. That includes pro-climate foundations funding groups that opposed housing near transit.

Mayor Mendenhall hopes that the Salt Lake City’s over-compliance with Utah SB 195 will stop future bills targeting the city’s streets. But MAGA’s actions at the state and federal levels have taught us that complying that over-compliance doesn’t work.

76% of Republicans aged 65+ aren't getting an updated COVID shot. That's going to be a long winter.
A majority of U.S. adults (59%) say they don’t want to get an updated COVID-19 vaccine. This is roughly identical to the share who said in October 2024 that they probably wouldn’t get the updated vaccine.

Minneapolis's reform to "end single-family zoning" was a very timid one. The reform kept bulk and height limits similar to those for existing single-family homes to "manage neighborhood character." For example, instead of a 2100 sqf unit, you can build 3 700 sqf units. Hence, the moderate success
The problem with social media is that all anyone really cares about is which team you’re on, and every statement is parsed as a declaration of team membership. So if you say, e.g., “Minneapolis’s experiment with ending single-family zoning was a moderate success” all people hear is “he’s Team NIMBY”

It’s exciting to see Utah’s Governor Cox advocate for missing middle housing. I hope it shows a recognition among state leaders that we won’t be able to solve our housing crisis via single-family housing only

For years, Utah cities and the League of Cities and Towns have said they are working to address the housing affordability crisis. Talk is cheap. Their actions speak louder than those promises. It is past time that the state of Utah creates some basic minimum zoning standards to promote housing
Riverton Wonders: Allow Some Townhomes or Lose Zoning Power?
The Riverton Planning Commission tabled a pitch for townhomes, but some officials worry about state preempting local cities for more housing.

These bills in red states across the country are a symptom that the GOP is not, in fact, a party that cares about safety, children, and families. And I guess we already knew that from gun control laws, but transportation is a whole new frontier for them
