wittgenstein says that buying two copies of the same newspaper doesn't increase the strength of your belief in the contents of the article, but i reckon it probably does. It reduces the odds that you happened to pick up a copy of the paper with several egregious printing errors.

just had one of the most depressing classes of my life. All my worst instincts about my classmates proved correct, these people do not care about receiving and education

gave a talk on philosophy of science at my old high school, they seemed to follow a lot of what I was talking about even though they don't have the chance to learn any philosophy.

and i think i convinced a few of them that numbers can't be observed

logic is literally magic:

-you have a cool rune language (⊥→∀x∃y(x=y) etc.)

-and spells in Latin:
modus ponens!
Ex contradictione quodlibet!

-and ancient scriptures which almost everyone has forgotten (Principia Mathematica).

i don't like the positioning of free will against determinism. it falsely implies that if determinism were found to be false, free will would necessarily be true. It's entirely plausible that the universe is not deterministic, but that free will still doesn't exist.

Here’s something on the value of philosophy that’s worth reading, especially for those administrators looking to cut departments in the humanities and arts. Should they read it? Yes! Will they? I think we all know the answer to that … #academicsky #philosophy open.substack.com/pub/hilarius...

had a realisation today that the aberdeen jehovah's witnesses choose to advertise their bible study course in quite possibly the worst place one could choose: outside king's college which itself is home to one of the best ranked theology departments in the country. Which means the main demographic

i also learned that the university cancelled the philosophy undergrad research course because it didn't attract enough students, despite it being nominated as one of the best courses offered by the entire university.

This institution is run by maniacs 🙃

someone suggested using gpt to calculate vote totals in a committee meeting recently. like, the idea of using a spreadsheet didn't even cross their mind
i have no idea what would compel a person to intentionally navigate to and use chatgpt as a search engine for real actual information. never in a million years. genuinely something wrong with you

my professor asked me what happened on my previous essay and said he didn't recognise me in my writing it is quite possibly the most devastating thing a professor has said to me so far in my degree.

i actually don't understand what the problem here is. Why should philosophy have more biology in it? What would that help achieve? What are the hollow thing's philosophers are saying that would be made better by inclusion of biology?
A lot of philosophy has always kinda rung hollow to me because there just isn’t very much biology in it and that seems insane to me.

(I recognize that some times when people have tried to put biology into philosophy have gone very bad.)

philosophy is weird because a lot of the people studying it are here for literally the exact opposite reason to me but we're all doing the same thing

i've finally joined my uni debating society and it's honestly a very fun way to spend an evening just arguing with people about whether or not we'd volunteer to go to mars, or if booktok has harmed society
