I was gesturing at the idea that the two aren't linked but it took me a while to work out why compatibilism was still feeling unsatisfying.

when i was a first year and learned what compatibilism was I was sympathetic to it because it correctly pointed out that the truth of determinism has no effect on the truth of free will. More recently I realised that this is because my intuition is incompatibilist.

If you want something more general, I like Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy. Each chapter is on a given person and if I remember correctly you can pick and choose who you'd like to read about, the chapters only lightly build on one another.

for stoicism and absurdism specifically, I'd say go straight to the source and read Aurelius' Meditations, and Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus. You won't get everything on the first pass but they're both fairly readable.
