Like the monks who walked this path to protect the saint’s body from marauders, Alanna Mitchell knows that she is also “on a journey of trial and sacrifice in the modern British wilderness.” But, she wonders, “what am I trying to find?”

And here's the recommendation: Longevity Conservation.
Longevity Conservation should include policy to protect old age-classes of animals. IUCN red listing of threatened species should include loss of age structure in criteria and ‘longevity overfishing’ should be recognised as a type of overfishing.

Since these old individuals are and important part of biodiversity (similar to old trees) we suggest ‘longevity conservation’ as a solution.

Older individuals make vital contributions to moderate and long-lived species, migratory animals and this where knowledge and cultural transmission are important. We refer to these as old animal storage effects and synthesise the benefits across life history strategies

Second, research conducted on old animals usually focuses on the negative aspects of ageing but that literature is changing rapidly.

Absolutely fascinating study on how the old members of a species make vital contributions.

So fun to work with you!!
In my new gig as executive editor of Up Here magazine, I get to work with great writers, including @alannamitchell.bsky.social. Read her fabulously smart piece on what a Nunavut murre colony has to say about the future of animals and plants www.uphere.ca/articles/pro...
