Moths. (Home trap located in VC13) Butterflies. MotorHomes. Scuba. Walking. Ebiking.
I believe they have been seen as far north as Dundee so there’s every possibility that one will fly past at some point. Perhaps next year? 🤞
I’m sure there are many I covet you could encourage back down my way svp.

Hopefully we’ve all one or two in our collection that could create a little envy in some quarter.

As a moth enthusiast I don’t think you should consider not taking a trap of some description wherever and whenever you travel in the U.K. I’ve just booked my NC500 trip for next year and am looking forward to putting some dots on my iRecord map up the top. Go for it.

TBF it was so close to a blank that it’s reached the point in the year when I will need to look carefully at the overnight forecast to decide if it’s worth burning electricity. Yesterday the rain all day was probably the issue. Still waiting for some potential autumn species I would expect to visit.

Not sure that’s a completely accurate summary of what I actually said. That being said there was an unidentified micro that escaped which would count. Sort of.

You may have just been unlucky locally as here in coastal W. Sussex I caught them on 28 occasions this year.
31 nights last year so not significantly down here.

I suppose a problem with reference books is that they are going out of date as soon as they are printed so I expect it’s a universal problem. Not to mention changes in classification.
Hopefully you’ll get a new one published locally soon but I expect that would be a mammoth undertaking.

Can I ask, is it that there isn’t an up to date reference book or just that you don’t have one ?

Love the idea of putting an asterisk alongside the names of the moths pictured. Clever 👍

Certainly the individuals that are visiting are too fresh to have flown very far.

To be fair, I’m retired, I don’t have my daughters at home anymore, I’ve no dog and I’ve never been a deep sleeper and always have been an early riser.
Trap setting is just part of my daily routine and I’m emptying it on autopilot with one eye open for something new.
