To hell with gerrymandering. Proportional Representation now!

People who want to "burn it all down" should note that one thing that isn't being torn down is something very central to America's problems: money in politics.

But you are not powerless about money in politics. Some ideas in the comments. Please add more.

Milestone: As of today, the government has spent more time shut down under Mr. Trump than under all other presidents combined.

All other presidents: 47.5 days of government shutdown.
Mr. Trump: 48 days (in his first term, 35 + 3, and in his second term, 10 and counting.)

Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game.

The greatest enemy of positive social change is cynicism about what can be changed.

In Denmark, it is illegal to burn the flag of any nation - except Denmark. You can burn the flag of Denmark in Denmark all you want.

In a free country, dissent is patriotic.

Look, I get that people are done with the status quo and want to burn the whole rigged system down.

But in light of recent events, can we focus some of that energy on gerrymandering?

How about a constitutional amendment requiring proportional representation in any election involving districts?

1. Appoint an inexperienced 22-year-old (Thomas Fugate) to lead DHS's counterterrorism program (CP3).
2. Attack one of the world's leading state sponsors of terrorism.

What could possibly go wrong?

Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine on Day One, bring grocery prices down on Day One, and to be a dictator, but only on Day One.

So... when will Day One be over?

I think the Presidential Oath of Office needs to be amended. How about: "... and I promise to not spend my time making up mean nicknames for people, to apologize when I am wrong, to listen to doctors about serious diseases, to not make it all about myself, and to not stare directly into the sun."

I expressed dismay to my wife at a clip of Secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth unable to name a single country in ASEAN.

So she quizzed me. I got 9 out of 10. (I forgot Brunei.) I'm not bragging. I'm just saying I pay attention to world news. And that guy is grossly unqualified.

For now, democracy is still in good shape in the US. At the same time, there is room for improvement. Singapore is less democratic, but still prosperous. Venezuela and Russia, however, are in terrible shape, but nevertheless have active pro-democracy movements. There is much to be thankful for.

This holiday season, if politics comes up with friends or family, I think it's important to take a step back and discuss where we get our news and why.

Besides left vs. right, there are other axes, like paying for news vs. free news, and watching news vs. reading.

What other axes are there?
