With Ames + Des Moines, IA having a high of 67°F today, my kids forced me to compute the climate sites with the highest frequency of a six seven high temp. The overall "winner" within my database is Hawaii National Park, HI (~1200m) at 25 days per year with a number of CA sites not far behind. #sigh

I do check X once a day for anybody contacting me for help and noticed this trending there. @shawnmilrad.bsky.social if you are listening...

Done, it takes a bit to generate though.

So even with the latest AWIPS geodatabase for CWAs, they don't line up. My guess is that the forecast zones, counties, and CWA borders don't all align in Alaska, so a crude border is drawn given the ambiguity. Do you have thoughts on this?

One always feels bad emailing the SDM in these situations as they likely are getting slammed by emails and can't send any alerts themselves as their dissemination is down as well. Alas, a data flow outage is afoot...

My goodness, sounds like a eulogy for me. I think I am still around, but your cookie is long gone. You also provided me with lots of muffins, which helped me out a bunch.

Here's an attempt for tornado warning (county based) warning counts normalized by county area. Caveats galore with this being the polygon area and how the polygons have inflated county warning counts.

~1986. I don't have this as a tool nationwide, but this does it on a more regional basis. mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/plotting/aut... Here's a raw top 10 county tornado warning count. I'll refresh a manually generated CONUS plot for this shortly.

Onto rebooting the next thing
July 16, 2025 at 7:25 PM
We have reached the reboot stage of this outage.
July 16, 2025 at 6:55 PM
By design or luck(?) that the few radars that are online are all with the current tornado warnings...
July 16, 2025 at 6:12 PM
2.5 hours into the outage, we get our first update.

Suboptimal, but looks colorful.

Plot shows weekly normalized NWS issuance counts of TOR, SVR, and FF Warnings. Top panel is Iowa WFOs and the bottom panel is nationwide. For Iowa, small populations during winter weeks cause the noisy bars. Clean annual signals otherwise.

Chasecation day 1. Life choices being made.

Getting old, bitter, jaded and other things, but it never ceases to amaze that the NWS still has no filters that prevent a product from getting disseminated like this one just now. They shunt this necessary QC work onto every end user that attempts to process their fire hose.

Here's my unofficial accounting of sites with newly set extreme combinations of temperature, dew point, and sustained winds. Will be looking for more sites and certainly watch as this repeats tomorrow. Please let me know if you have candidates for the list, my website has no tool for this attm :(

Given the current political climate, I find NOAA/NWS notices like this to be quite interesting/risky.

Even larger blow up today.
